Wine Summary Image

Vineyards

The fruit for the 2018 Woodhenge Shiraz is sourced fruit from Gateway, Dog Ridge, Quandong and Nocowie vineyards.

Oak Maturation

A combination of French and American oak barriques and hogsheads. A new oak component of 35%, the balance made up of one, two and three year old barrels.

Vinification

Fruit parcels of typical Woodhenge style were selected: rich generous McLaren Vale Shiraz fruit, with the Wirra style stamped firmly over it. Gently crushed and destemmed to open top and static fermenters, parcels were tasted twice daily by the Wirra winemakers to determine number of daily plunges and pumpovers for tannin, colour and flavour extraction. Once pressed and sugar dry, parcels were run to oak barrels to complete malolactic fermentation. These individual vineyard parcels were racked and returned separately throughout maturation, the final selection was blended at 17 months of age. The wine was traditionally fined lightly with egg white, filtered and bottled.

Winery Tasting Notes

Colour

Deep crimson with a magenta edge.

Bouquet

Ripe mulberry, blood plums, cocoa and sweet spices along with blue fruits and hints of fruitcake.

Palate

Rich with voluptuous fruit and dense with velvety tannins, the palate is remarkably generous and plush. There are notes of earth and leather, and oak contributions of mocha, cedar and vanilla biscuit. A McLaren Vale Shiraz in the classic style, the wine is full but supple, liqueur-ish and long.

Drink

Remarkably drinkable on release, it will nevertheless benefit from cellaring up to 12 years.

Food Match

Peppercorn, fennel and mustard roast beef with a red wine gravy.

Winery Profile

Wirra Wirra is situated 37 km south of Adelaide in South Australia's famous McLaren Vale wine region. It is an historic site, which was originally built in 1894 and which by 1903 was producing a substantial quantity of wine that was primarily exported to the rest of the British Empire.

Wirra Wirra is an aboriginal name meaning "amongst the gumtrees". It was established by Robert Strangways Wigley, a former state cricketer and well known eccentric. Following his death in 1924 the vineyards were sold by his family and the cellars fell into disuse. It remained that way until 1969 when the site was bought from Vern Sparrow, son of Wigley's foreman Jack Sparrow, by cousins Greg and Roger Trott.

Assisted by Roger and armed with a few old photos and sketches, Greg re-built the derelict Wirra Wirra winery from two remaining walls and some slate fermenting tanks, transforming it into the handsome winery it is today. Trott did this all in his own inimitable style - always passionate, always iconoclastic, always fun and always unique. Trott lived by a simple philosophy; "Never give misery an even break, nor bad wine a second sip. You must be serious about quality, dedicated to your task in life, especially winemaking, but this should all be fun."

After a long illness, Trott passed away in 2005, but his spirit and sense of purpose is alive and well at Wirra Wirra. The winery has built a reputation for its classic McLaren Vale reds and elegant Adelaide Hills whites and has been described by James Halliday as “the best small to medium producer in McLaren vale and up there among the nation’s finest.”

Visitors to the historic ironstone cellars at Wirra Wirra will get a touch of Greg Trott's philosophy which is built around the celebration of life: great food, stimulating conversation, marvellous music, and of course a fine bottle of wine. From the massive post and rail fence, known as “Woodhenge” to the giant Angelus bell that sits atop the winery, Wirra Wirra has discoveries that have helped make it a must-visit destination in the McLaren Vale wine region.
