Wine Summary Image

Oak Maturation

A combination of French and American oak barriques and hogsheads. New oak accounted for 40% of the final blend with the balance a combination of older barrels up to five years old.

Vinification

Fruit parcels of a typical Woodhenge style were selected: rich, generous McLaren Vale shiraz. After being gently crushed and destemmed to open top and static fermenters, these parcels were tasted twice daily by the Wirra Wirra winemakers to determine the number of daily plunges and pump overs for tannin, colour and flavour extraction. Once pressed and dry, they were run to oak barrels to complete malolactic fermentation and racked and returned separately throughout maturation. The final selection was blended at 18 months of age before returning to oak for another 3 months. The wine was lightly fined, filtered and bottled.

Winery Tasting Notes

Colour

Deep garnet with bright ruby edges.

Bouquet

After the volumes of dark plums, blackberries and florals (think violets), find all-spice and fruitcake notes, vanilla, toast and cocoa.

Palate

Rich and full-bodied, the depth of fruit generosity is wrapped around grainy, wellstructured tannins. The combination gives both volume and length to the palate. The characters of dusky-red ripe fruits, oak derived spices and cedar notes, and the savoury, mineral tannins have combined for layered complexity. Pleasingly, this very substantial wine remains fresh and youthful throughout, with the promise of great things to come.

Drink

As attractive as the wine is in its youth, cellaring for up to 15 years will produce greater complexity.

Food Match

Dry aged grilled steak, or a roast of kipflers, butternut, leek and garlic.

Winery Profile

Wirra Wirra is situated 37 km south of Adelaide in South Australia's famous McLaren Vale wine region. It is an historic site, which was originally built in 1894 and which by 1903 was producing a substantial quantity of wine that was primarily exported to the rest of the British Empire.

Wirra Wirra is an aboriginal name meaning "amongst the gumtrees". It was established by Robert Strangways Wigley, a former state cricketer and well known eccentric. Following his death in 1924 the vineyards were sold by his family and the cellars fell into disuse. It remained that way until 1969 when the site was bought from Vern Sparrow, son of Wigley's foreman Jack Sparrow, by cousins Greg and Roger Trott.

Assisted by Roger and armed with a few old photos and sketches, Greg re-built the derelict Wirra Wirra winery from two remaining walls and some slate fermenting tanks, transforming it into the handsome winery it is today. Trott did this all in his own inimitable style - always passionate, always iconoclastic, always fun and always unique. Trott lived by a simple philosophy; "Never give misery an even break, nor bad wine a second sip. You must be serious about quality, dedicated to your task in life, especially winemaking, but this should all be fun."

After a long illness, Trott passed away in 2005, but his spirit and sense of purpose is alive and well at Wirra Wirra. The winery has built a reputation for its classic McLaren Vale reds and elegant Adelaide Hills whites and has been described by James Halliday as “the best small to medium producer in McLaren vale and up there among the nation’s finest.”

Visitors to the historic ironstone cellars at Wirra Wirra will get a touch of Greg Trott's philosophy which is built around the celebration of life: great food, stimulating conversation, marvellous music, and of course a fine bottle of wine. From the massive post and rail fence, known as “Woodhenge” to the giant Angelus bell that sits atop the winery, Wirra Wirra has discoveries that have helped make it a must-visit destination in the McLaren Vale wine region.
