Winery Tasting Notes

This 2021 Samuel's Collection Eden Valley Chardonnay has pale straw colour with green tints, fresh, complex, and showing a fine line of natural acidity. The first impression unfolds lemon and grapefruit on background of apple blossom, with time in the glass the wine is opening to reveal hints of fresh pears, jasmine, toasted sour dough bread, and flint. Richly aromatic and vibrant, medium bodied and creamy, this wine will continue to build extra complexity and richness with further time in bottle.

Winery Profile

Red 5 Star Winery -James Halliday, Australian Wine Companion Edition 2011

Family-owned and run by Robert Hill Smith, Yalumba has long had a commitment to quality and has shown great vision in its selection of vineyard sites, new varieties and brands. It has always been a serious player at the top end of full-bodied (and full-blooded) Australian reds, and was the pioneer in the use of screwcaps. While its estate vineyards are largely planted to mainstream varieties, it has taken marketing ownership of viognier. However, these days its own brands revolve around the Y Series and a number of stand-alone brands across the length and breadth of SA. Yalumba has been very successful in building its export base. Exports to all major markets.

Bright acidity here

90 Points

This has attractive ripe peach, melon and tropical fruit on the nose and palate. Soft-textured with plenty of succulent, fleshy peach fruit. Bright acidity here. Drink now. Screw cap.

Generous and refreshing

90 Points

Brimming with lemon-curd aromas, plus notes of fresh pineapple and grapefruit, this chardonnay is both generous and refreshing. Solid structure and good length. Vegan. Drink now. Screw cap.

Stone and citrus revival

88

Eden Valley-sourced chardonnay from way up, around 540m above sea level, wild yeast, 50/50% stainless tank/French oak maturation. Pale straw. Peach, nectarine and citrus fruits with dots of cream, soft spice, roast nuts, white flowers and stone. Some grapefruit pith texture and lemon curd on the palate finishing with a sizzling line of acidity and a stone and citrus revival.
