Expert Reviews

Fruit-pure and enduring

97 Points

Yalumba has firmly positioned itself at the pointy end of the Australian viognier hierarchy with its Virgilius. It's a style more in line with the wines of the northern Rhône than the usual overtly apricotty numbers we often see from the Antipodes. Steely and textural with savoury-shaped stone fruits and a light dusting of apricot and citrus fruits, along with notes of marzipan, dried honey and light ginger spice. It boasts a savoury, stony palate shape and a light tweak of phenolics on the finish, which is fruit-pure and enduring.

Winery Tasting Notes

Pale gold with green highlights. Intense aromas of apricots, cardamom, white pepper and fresh ginger. Lifted ginger spice is layered on the palate with mineral, sourdough-like texture, apricots and almond savouriness. The hallmark Viognier texture of the palate is clearly evident in this wine. It is complex while at the same time shows purity and restraint that will unwind slowly in the glass and take the imbiber on a sensory journey.

Winery Profile

Red 5 Star Winery -James Halliday, Australian Wine Companion Edition 2011

Family-owned and run by Robert Hill Smith, Yalumba has long had a commitment to quality and has shown great vision in its selection of vineyard sites, new varieties and brands. It has always been a serious player at the top end of full-bodied (and full-blooded) Australian reds, and was the pioneer in the use of screwcaps. While its estate vineyards are largely planted to mainstream varieties, it has taken marketing ownership of viognier. However, these days its own brands revolve around the Y Series and a number of stand-alone brands across the length and breadth of SA. Yalumba has been very successful in building its export base. Exports to all major markets.

A glamourous Viognier

96 Points

Yalumba's flagship white wine, this Virgilius Viognier sees 11 months in old French oak. Coming off vines planted in 1980, this is flirtatious yet it wants to get serious all at the same time. It's excellent really. Swirl the glass and be attracted by the scents of fresh lemon juice, white field flowers and fresh apricots. Oh so delicate, these flow through to the mouth seamlessly. White fleshed peaches are a highlight and are framed by soft ginger spices as they dance across the mouth. A delicate creaminess runs a seductive ribbon through the core of the wine - there is a noticeable joyous vibe about its presence. A glamourous Viognier. Drink to five years+ -
