Wine Summary Image

Tasmania is renowned as Australia’s home of great quality sparkling wine. This Cuvée is made from wines grown on multiple sites in Tasmania, all producing excellent sparkling wine fruit.

All batches are kept separate during winemaking to maximise blending options and the complexity of the final wines. The wines go through secondary fermentation in bottles and are aged on yeast lees for as long as possible; the average tirage of the final blend is 2 years. This blend is made with 52% Chardonnay and 48% Pinot Noir.

Expert Reviews

This is always a quality domestic sparkling and this new base is no exception

94 Points

Long a staple across the festive season, this is always a quality domestic sparkling and this new base is no exception. Best is the integration: creamy and yet fresh; rich yet ethereal. Neither the yeast-derived toastiness, nor the cool climate acidity, sticking out over the other. Scents of autumnal fruits, nuts, brûlee and nougat pulled long and gently saline.

Winery Tasting Notes

Very pale gold in colour with a fine, persistent mousse. The nose displays aromas of honeysuckle, citrus zest and fresh strawberries from the Chardonnay and Pinot Noir fruit. Extended time on lees during secondary fermentation contributes more complex aromas of nougat and roasted nuts. The palate is balanced with delicate fruit flavour, fine creamy texture and a refreshing natural acidity. The finish is dry and fresh with lingering flavours of citrus and nougat. Once released, this wine is ready to enjoy.

Winery Profile

Jansz Tasmania vineyard lies in the Tamar Valley in the heart of the Pipers River region in north eastern Tasmania. With a mantle of red basalt soils and a cool climate moderated by the proximity of Bass Strait, the Jansz Tasmania vineyards are ideal for allowing grapes to ripen slowly and develop the lingering acidity essential to produce a premium sparkling wine. Jansz was Tasmania’s first sparkling wine to be made according to the traditional méthod champenoise and, as the only Tasmanian specialist solely devoted to the art of sparkling winemaking, Jansz Tasmania has since come to describe the technique used in creating each of their definitive wines as Méthode Tasmanoise.

A tasty drop at a bargain price

93 Points

The latest nonvintage from Australia’s most famous Tasmanian sparkling producer is a tasty drop at a bargain price. A blend of Champagne’s three classic varieties, this bottling combines fruit from the north and south of the island. Eighteen months on lees results in a bubbly that is mostly fruit driven—lemon, apple and pear—with the yeast-derived brioche notes serving as a backdrop.

Breezy and floral

92 Points

Breezy and floral, with gentle grassy tones around lemon pith, apple skin and yellow plums, then layers of pastry on the tail.

Delicious, creamy, bright, fresh palate

90 Points

The fruit is sourced from selected cool climate vineyards across Tasmania and ends up as individual batches especially chosen to form the Cuvée base. The blend usually is 75/25 chardonnay/ pinot noir. The nose is a riot of aromas mixing lemon zest, honeysuckle, and a subtle wild strawberry note. It gets 18 months of lees contact, adding a nutty complex underside to support a delicious, creamy, bright, fresh palate full of citrus and salinity. Oysters are the west coast match. This delicious non-vintage sparkler was first released in 1999. - Anthony Gismondi, Sparkling Report 2023, 14 October 2022
