Semillon is a sweet, dry white wine varietal that is full flavoured and aromatic. In most cases, Semillon is best consumed when young and is widely regarded as one of Australia’s greatest wine styles.
A productive and vigorous grower, Semillon has been cultivated in Australia for well over a hundred years. There are numerous outstanding examples of Semillon across the country with some of the best originating in the Hunter Valley (Hunter Valley Semillon is considered a classic by wine aficionados), Barossa Valley and Margaret River. Young Semillons tend to exhibit fruity flavours including lemon, lime, melon, fig and nectarine. They tend to have a crisp, zesty greenness that develops as the wine matures. An aged Semillon can have distinct flavours of pear, grapefruit, nutty almond, butterscotch and honey with citrus overtones.A young Semillon is the perfect accompaniment for freshly shucked oysters, mussels, clams or a pasta salad. An older, more complex Semillon, is wonderful with smoked salmon.
