Pinot Noir is a light to medium bodied red wine that is notoriously fickle to work with. Due to the challenges faced by growers and vintners a comparably small quantity is made compared to other red wine varietals. Pinot Noir is therefore more sought after and highly prized.
Once grown exclusively on the Côte de Nuits in Burgundy, Pinot Noir is now cultivated in cooler regions worldwide. In Australia, Pinot Noir is grown with great success in the rich soils of the Yarra Valley, Mornington Peninsula, Adelaide Hills, Tasmania and the Great Southern region of W.A. Young Pinot Noir usually exhibits fruity characteristics of plums, cherries and raspberries but as the wine matures these characteristics become more complex and include flavours like chocolate, fig, truffles and earthiness. Compared to darker red wines, Pinot Noir lacks longevity in the bottle. For the best tasting experience drink this wine between five and eight years past vintage.
