St Huberts The Stag Pinot Noir (6x 750mL).

Description:

Hubert de Castella's passion for the Yarra Valley saw him establish St Huberts in 1862. By the late 1800s it had grown to be the largest estate in the area. The wines enjoyed immediate and on-going success at wine shows both domestically and abroad. The onset of the Great Depression, the increasing popularity of fortified wine and the emerging profitability of dairy farming saw the vineyard revert to grazing in the 1920s. It wasn't until the 1960s that the Yarra Valley again rose to prominence as a wine region and St Huberts was once again one of the pioneers.

After the success and cult following achieved by our St Huberts The Stag Yarra Valley Pinot, we decided more people need to drink Pinot Noir, and we needed to venture out of the Yarra! Fruit for this wine was harvested from selected sites, mainly around Yea, with some Beechworth and others in the mix. Picked early to maintain vibrant fruit, and treated respectfully to maintain freshness.

Winery Tasting Notes

Notes Image

Fresh, supple, fleshy - Pinot for the masses – that sings like Pinot!

Nose - Varietal sour cherries and cranberries, with a dash of strawberries. There’s hints of earth, stalks, graphite, and savoury spice

Palate - The wine is light to medium bodied, and savoury, spicy cherry flavours follow from the nose. The palate is supple, even and vibrant with a sprinkle of tight knit tannins.

Winery Profile

Brand Profile Image

St Huberts was originally founded in 1862 by winemaking pioneer and Swiss immigrant Charles Hubert de Castella, who helped position the region as a premium wine producing area.

By 1876 the St Huberts vineyard was over 80 hectares including 28 hectares of Hermitage (Shiraz), eight hectares of Cabernet Sauvignon and four hectares of Marsanne. By the late 1800s the winery had established itself as one of the grandest wineries in the state,  winning the Emperor of Germany’s Grand Prize at the 1881 Melbourne International Exhibition, and a Grand Prix award at the 1889 Paris Exposition – both phenomenal achievements for Australian wine.

Around the Great Depression in the 1920s all vineyards in the Yarra Valley reverted to other agricultural pursuits, nonetheless St Hubert’s was one of the first to replant in 1966, championing the rejuvenation of the Valley as one of Australia’s great cool climate regions.

The St Huberts legacy continues to this day in the hands of experienced winemaker Greg Jarratt. Greg has led St Huberts since 2006, working with the vineyard and winery team to honour the high standards set at St Huberts since its inception over 150 years ago. Extending the portfolio in 2016, St Huberts released a single vineyard Blanc de Noir sparkling wine in addition to launching The Stag Shiraz and Chardonnay.
