The 40 mm automatic was the size Cartier added to the Ballon Bleu line at Watches & Wonders 2021, slotting between the long-running 36 mm and 42 mm models and quickly becoming the most requested configuration in the collection. Still in current production and consistently difficult to secure at retail in steel-on-steel, which supports firm pre-owned pricing.

The blue sunray-brushed dial was introduced specifically for this 40 mm generation and departs from the guilloché dials that defined earlier Ballon Bleu references. Silvered Roman numerals and sword hands sit against a metallic finish that shifts from near-navy to bright cobalt with the light, giving the reference a more contemporary read than the classic silvered version — and it is the variant buyers ask for by name.

Powered by the Cartier manufacture calibre 1847 MC, an in-house automatic running at 4 Hz with roughly 40 hours of reserve. A significant step up from the quartz movements found throughout much of the wider Ballon Bleu catalogue, and the reason this size commands a premium over the quartz-equipped references.

Presented in excellent pre-owned condition. Case and bezel retain their high-polish finish with crisp, unrounded edges; bracelet stretch is minimal and the clasp closes with positive action. Dial, hands and crown cabochon are free of defect, and the watch is running within specification.
