Expert Reviews

The 2019 Grace Madeline hails from a cooler vintage in Margaret River, one that has been responsible for a tranche of elegant, cool, mineral and spicy wines, in both red and white. Aromatically, this wine leads with pressed white flowers and an attractively soft, talcy note, set against a grassy, straw-laden backdrop. In the mouth, the texture is chalky and soft and the finish long. This is a beautiful wine, one that captures the essence of the vintage eloquently. I prefer this wine today compared to on release, speaking to its graceful capacity for aging. 12.9% alcohol, sealed under screw cap.

According to the technical sheet provided by Cullen Wines during this tasting, the Sauvignon Blanc component was hand-harvested on a biodynamic fruit day and the Semillon on a moon opposite Saturn flower day. The Sauvignon Blanc portion had overnight skin contact and was then pressed to 100% new oak puncheons for fermentation and five months of maturation, while the Semillon portion was pressed immediately to tank and older barriques for fermentation and four months of maturation. The final blend is 67% Sauvignon Blanc and 33% Semillon, with an average of five months in 55% new oak.- The Wine Advocate

Winery Tasting Notes

Notes Image

Cullen Grace Madeline 2019 is a striking, premium expression of Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot from the biodynamic Cullen vineyard in Margaret River. The wine exudes powerful aromas of dark berries—blackcurrant, mulberry—alongside notes of graphite, fresh herbs, and a hint of tobacco. On the palate, it’s full-bodied with rich, velvety tannins and vibrant acidity, offering layers of black fruit, cedar, and earthy nuances. The long finish is framed by a touch of chocolate and spice, showcasing both the intensity and elegance of this wine. The Magnum format allows for further aging potential, allowing the wine to develop even more complexity over time. A refined, well-structured red with superb aging potential.

Winery Profile

Winemaking began on the Cullen property in Margaret River less than 40 years ago. Studies in South Western Australia conducted in the early 1960Â?s showed that Margaret River had some special qualities. The climate was particularly suited to growing Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot. On the advice of eminent agronomist Dr John Gladstones, Kevin and Diana Cullen planted a trial acre of vines at Willyabrup in 1966. The encouraging results of this led to the planting of 18acres of vines on the sheep and cattle farm in 1971, including their first Cabernet Sauvignon vines. Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay, Semillon, Merlot and Cabernet Franc were planted between 1976 and 1978. Cullen Wines has since evolved into an estate specialising in single vineyard, premium quality wines focussed on wine integrity, rather than rapid expansion.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★

Wines displaying a 5 star designation are recognised as being of proven quality provenance, our team has verified that the wine has been stored correctly from original purchase straight from the winery, documentation, where possible, has been sighted and cellaring conditions have been inspected. This wine generally comes from only the best and most respected of wine collectors in Australia.

★ ★ ★ ★

Wines displaying a 4 star designation have been cellared correctly as verified by the current owners. In general these wines have been purchased from retailers or traders and stored in cellared conditions from original purchase.

★ ★ ★

Wines displaying a 3 star designation are in good condition when we inspect and we are able to confirm some cellaring conditions but we are unable to verify all ownership and storage conditions of their history.

A wine displaying no stars doesn’t mean that there is a problem with the wine, it simply means that we have been unable to verify provenance, however a quality image is always available for the purchaser to make their own purchasing decisions.

Private Cellar wine is wine which has been stored for aging purposes in a Private Cellar.

Storing the wine and allowing it to age has the potential to improve the quality of the wine. While wine is perishable and capable of deteriorating, storing the wine can alter the aroma, colour, mouthfeel and taste of the wine in a way that may be more pleasing to the taster.
