Wine Summary Image

Cullen Cabernet Merlot (now Diana Madeline) 1999

Perhaps Cullen's best known wine, this blend was recently included in the prestigious Langton classification of Australian wines. The vines planted in 1971 are 30 years old. On average the yields are around two tons per acre, or 26 hectolitres per hectare, giving great concentration to the wine. They are grown on the Scott Henry trellising system which yields grapes with ripe tannins and flavours.

The early summer was cool with southerly winds dominating in this part of the season. This gave the vintage a late start and the grapes achieved flavour ripeness at lower sugar levels. Cyclone Vance, which created havoc around Australia, threatened the vintage just as the reds were approaching harvest. Fortunately, Vance diverted eastward and the reds were saved. After this nature turned on the most glorious Indian summer which lasted for weeks and produced one of the best red wine vintages of the decade. A small amount of Petit Verdot from the Mangan Vineyard was added to the wine.

Strong purple-red, the powerful but pristine bouquet proclaims the blackberry/blackcurrant/cassis fruit of the palate framed by the inimitable Cullen tannins which run through from the mid-palate to the finish. Rating 96 - Drink by 2020 - James Halliday, Australian Wine Companion (OCT/2001)

Winery Profile

Possibly Cullen's best known wine, this flagship red is named in honour of Diana Madeline Cullen, who along with husband Dr Kevin John Cullen, planted their first Cabernet Sauvignon vines in 1971, in Wilyabrup, a sub-region just north of Margaret River township.

Additional varietals were planted in 1971, 1976 and finally in 1988, to both red and white varietals, including Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc and Petit Verdot, and a final planting in 1988. The Mangan Vineyard, situated just across the road from the Cullen Vineyard, was planted between 1995 and 1997, and contributes Malbec amongst other red and white varietals.

The wines these days are made by their daughter Vanya Cullen, who took over the role of winemaker in 1989, and has consistently been at the forefront of advancing Australian wine knowledge, just as her parents once did. Cullen received organic certification in 1998, and began the conversion to full biodynamic viticulture in 2003, with certification received in 2004 for the Cullen Vineyard, and 2008 for the Mangan Vineyard.

The Cullen Cabernet Merlot was renamed 'Diana Madeline Cabernet Merlot' in 2003, in honour of her passing, and her enormous contribution to the Australian Wine Industry, being chief winemaker at Cullen from 1981 until passing the reigns to Vanya in 1989, and along the way becoming the first woman winemaker to win a trophy at the Royal Perth Show, in 1982.

The 'Cabernet Merlot' aspect was removed from the label in 2005, and the wine has simply been known as 'Diana Madeline' ever since.

Cullen's focus on viticulture, first and foremost, lends an elegance and intense concentration to the wines, with a focus on achieving tannin ripeness and balanced fruit. The Diana Madeline has excellent cellaring potential, and is indisputably a world-class Cabernet blend, and certainly one of the great wines of Australia, with significant interest on the secondary market for older vintages.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★

Wines displaying a 5 star designation are recognised as being of proven quality provenance, our team has verified that the wine has been stored correctly from original purchase straight from the winery, documentation, where possible, has been sighted and cellaring conditions have been inspected. This wine generally comes from only the best and most respected of wine collectors in Australia.

★ ★ ★ ★

Wines displaying a 4 star designation have been cellared correctly as verified by the current owners. In general these wines have been purchased from retailers or traders and stored in cellared conditions from original purchase.

★ ★ ★

Wines displaying a 3 star designation are in good condition when we inspect and we are able to confirm some cellaring conditions but we are unable to verify all ownership and storage conditions of their history.

A wine displaying no stars doesn’t mean that there is a problem with the wine, it simply means that we have been unable to verify provenance, however a quality image is always available for the purchaser to make their own purchasing decisions.

Private Cellar wine is wine which has been stored for aging purposes in a Private Cellar.

Storing the wine and allowing it to age has the potential to improve the quality of the wine. While wine is perishable and capable of deteriorating, storing the wine can alter the aroma, colour, mouthfeel and taste of the wine in a way that may be more pleasing to the taster.
