Wine Summary Image

A landmark vintage of this iconic Eden Valley white wine, widely celebrated as an exceptional year for South Australian Riesling.

Coming from a cool, slow-ripening growing season, this wine is legendary for its razor-sharp purity, intense drive, and phenomenal aging potential.

Colour: Brilliant pale straw with distinctive lime-green flashes at the rim.

Nose: Highly expressive and beautifully evolved. It opens with vibrant aromas of lime juice, lemon blossom, and white peach, layered with complex aged notes of toast, lemongrass, and a classic, mineral kerosene character.

Palate: Intense, precise, and taut. It features a wonderful concentration of lime curd and slate-like minerality, offering an incredibly focused, bone-dry palate that feels seamless and light on its feet.

Finish: Exceptionally long, crisp, and clean, driven by a persistent, steely acid backbone that has allowed the wine to cellar beautifully over decades.

Expert Reviews

92 Pts - Halliday Rating

Light to medium yellow-green; the bouquet shows the typical lime juice fruit of the Eden Valley, the palate with rich, already accessible, fruit on entry, then a complex structure with some grip to the finish.

  • James Halliday, 20 June 2021.

Winery Profile

Henschke is one of the longest established family names in the Barossa and the Australian wine industry. Johann Christian Henschke first planted vines in Keyneton in 1861, producing his first commercial vintage in 1868.

The tradition of quality winemaking has passed down through the generations – today seeing Stephen Henschke and his wife, Prue, as winemaker and viticulturist respectively.

Awarded "International Red Winemaker of the Year" in 1996 at the London Wine Show, Stephen and Prue were in 2006, awarded Gourmet Traveller WINE magazine's "Winemaker of the Year" in recognition of winemaking excellence in both red and white wines. These Awards recognise the consistent and continuing success of this remarkable couple.

Prue has, for the last 18 years, explored and now employs both organic and biodynamic strategies to maximise the potential for the fruit from these unique vineyards to fully express their individual terroirs.

We take the time to individually inspect each bottle and photograph it so you know exactly what you are buying. All Private Cellar wine stored at GraysOnline is kept in a temperature controlled wine storage area. Any wine that doesn’t meet our quality standards will not be sold.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★

Wines displaying a 5 star designation are recognised as being of proven quality provenance, our team has verified that the wine has been stored correctly from original purchase straight from the winery, documentation, where possible, has been sighted and cellaring conditions have been inspected. This wine generally comes from only the best and most respected of wine collectors in Australia.

★ ★ ★ ★

Wines displaying a 4 star designation have been cellared correctly as verified by the current owners. In general these wines have been purchased from retailers or traders and stored in cellared conditions from original purchase.

★ ★ ★

Wines displaying a 3 star designation are in good condition when we inspect and we are able to confirm some cellaring conditions but we are unable to verify all ownership and storage conditions of their history.

A wine displaying no stars doesn’t mean that there is a problem with the wine, it simply means that we have been unable to verify provenance, however a quality image is always available for the purchaser to make their own purchasing decisions.

Private Cellar wine is wine which has been stored for aging purposes in a Private Cellar.

Storing the wine and allowing it to age has the potential to improve the quality of the wine. While wine is perishable and capable of deteriorating, storing the wine can alter the aroma, colour, mouthfeel and taste of the wine in a way that may be more pleasing to the taster.
