Langton’s Classified: Excellent

Top Vintage

Tight, complex and stylish. Dark plum with prune beneath, the fruits are courted by enticing anise/liquorice and fennel subtleties. Fruit-derived, pronounced, tight angular tannins suggest this appealing palate, moderate in alcohol and extraction, is but an infant. Excellent balance/mouth feel - a St. Henri trademark

Expert Reviews

"I am singularly unconvinced that St Henri should be one sixth of the price of Grange, particularly with a classic vintage such as this. Piquantly ripe and fragrant, it is fruit-driven from start to finish (still matured in large, old oak vats), with a smooth and supple fresh berry palate and plush tannins."

Rating 95 Drink 2020 - James Halliday, Wine Companion - Date Tasted Oct 00

Winery Tasting Notes

Notes Image
  • Colour: Medium-deep crimson.
Nose:

Fragrant cassis, smoky, graphite, roasted chestnut aromas.

Palate:

Gracefully proportioned yet substantial with deep-set inky cassis, smoky, liquorice, roasted chestnut flavours and slinky, long graphite-textured tannins.

Finish:

Lovely sweet fruit drives over a chalky firm finish. Lovely power, density and length.

Wine Background

St. Henri was developed in the mid 1950s by John Davoren, a contemporary of Max Schubert, who set out to create a wine which captured the richness of ripe Shiraz without oak influence and had the capacity to support extended cellaring. The first commercial release of St. Henri was the 1957 vintage in 1958.

The St. Henri style is in distinct contrast to Grange and Penfolds overall winemaking style, with the wine matured mostly in large, 2000 litre oak casks which impart almost no wood character. In style, St. Henri is an elegant wine that relies on varietal definition and structure.

Winery Profile

Australia's winemaking history of less than two hundred years is brief by European measures though, like Europe, punctuated by periods of extreme success and difficult times. From the earliest winemaking days Penfolds has figured prominently and few would argue the importance of Penfolds' influence on Australia's winemaking psyche.

Without the influence of Penfolds the modern Australian wine industry would look very different indeed. Sitting comfortably outside of fad and fashion, Penfolds has taken Australian wine to the world on a grand stage and forged a reputation for quality that is without peer.

Penfolds' reputation for making wines of provenance and cellaring potential might suggest a mantle of tradition and formality is the preferred attire of a company with so much history to defend. But to label Penfolds as simply an established and conventional winemaker, would be to confuse tradition with consideration and to overlook the innovative spirit that has driven Penfolds since its foundation, and continues to find expression in modern times.

If there is anything traditional about Penfolds, it is the practice of constantly reviewing the wines it already does well, and continuously evolving and refining styles as vineyards mature and access to ever older and more varied vineyard sites improves.

We take the time to individually inspect each bottle and photograph it so you know exactly what you are buying. All Private Cellar wine stored at GraysOnline is kept in a temperature controlled wine storage area. Any wine that doesn’t meet our quality standards will not be sold.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★

Wines displaying a 5 star designation are recognised as being of proven quality provenance, our team has verified that the wine has been stored correctly from original purchase straight from the winery, documentation, where possible, has been sighted and cellaring conditions have been inspected. This wine generally comes from only the best and most respected of wine collectors in Australia.

★ ★ ★ ★

Wines displaying a 4 star designation have been cellared correctly as verified by the current owners. In general these wines have been purchased from retailers or traders and stored in cellared conditions from original purchase.

★ ★ ★

Wines displaying a 3 star designation are in good condition when we inspect and we are able to confirm some cellaring conditions but we are unable to verify all ownership and storage conditions of their history.

A wine displaying no stars doesn’t mean that there is a problem with the wine, it simply means that we have been unable to verify provenance, however a quality image is always available for the purchaser to make their own purchasing decisions.

Private Cellar wine is wine which has been stored for aging purposes in a Private Cellar.

Storing the wine and allowing it to age has the potential to improve the quality of the wine. While wine is perishable and capable of deteriorating, storing the wine can alter the aroma, colour, mouthfeel and taste of the wine in a way that may be more pleasing to the taster.
