Wine Summary Image

As the name suggests this particular vineyard abuts the land owned by Singleton Infantry Base. The Lower Hunter Valley finished the calendar year with 680mm of rain and the majority of that in the winter months. Friday 20th November saw the temperature hit 46C and gave way to one of our more spectacular summer storms. The hail that swept across the lower Hunter Valley, came around the foothills of the Brokenback Range, then swung north east taking in the Graveyard and Verona vines.

A bit of fruit thinning, even if random, didn’t do too much harm and the continued 40C weather helped dry out the damaged fruit. Vintage started on the 20th January and all whites picked by 28th, one of the most compressed pickings at Brokenwood. Varying sugars from 10.5 baume up to nearly 12 for the Semillon.

Expert Reviews

90+ points Lisa Perrotti-Brown, Wine Advocate; “The 2010 Army Block Vineyard Semillon has an intense nose of fresh lime juice, lime leaves, grass, grapefruit peel and a whiff of white pepper. Dry, light-bodied and very crisp, it has plenty of taut, restrained citrus flavors and a long finish. Give it another 18 months+ in bottle and drink it 2013-2020.”

Sarah Ahmed 06/04/2011; “So-called because the vineyard abuts land owned by Singleton Infantry Base. This is the first time Brokenwood has released a current vintage Single Vineyard Semillon. It shows ripe lemon zest, powder puff and talc and, though well structured is quite fleshy through the mid-palate. Broachable now but lots of potential – like the talc!”

93 points Gary Collins; “The first sample bottle was more mature, dry, short, showing its age. The 2nd sample bottle was delicious. Limes, lemons, talc, subtle bread and honey. The bouquet is fresh and lively. It’s a lighter style Semillon but doesn’t lack flavour. The palate is good, just a touch short with some phenolics on the finish. Despite that, it’s really drinking well and frankly, it’s delicious and a bargain for the price. A 16 year old wine for $22 is crazy good value. Clearly, the odd bottle is going to be different so bare that in mind. Drink this year and next.

Winery Tasting Notes

Notes Image

At 11 years old on re-release, the colour has started to deepen but still maintains some green hues. Lifted aroma of Bickford lime cordial and a hint of toasted nuts. Beautifully balanced palate of lemon curd, brioche and nougat. Perfect acid structure keeps the flavour lingering. Superb drinking now or over the medium term.

Winery Profile

Brokenwood Wines has been named the 2026 Halliday Wine Companion Winery of the Year, one of the most respected honours in Australian wine.

At nearly 40 years young, Brokenwood Wines, in the heart of the Hunter Valley, can lay claim to not only an iconic vineyard with the Graveyard Vineyard but to the preservation of a wine fraternity that proudly has as its mission statement, 'to make great wine and have fun'.

The original land that was to become the Cricket Pitch Vineyard was purchased in 1970 and planted immediately to Shiraz and Cabernet Sauvignon. The Graveyard Vineyard, planted to Shiraz in 1968, was bought in 1978 and by the mid 1980s was producing a premium Single Vineyard wine. The first Langton's Classification of Premium Australian Wine was launched in 1993 and the Graveyard Shiraz was then, and remains, the highest-placed Hunter Valley Shiraz.

The Hunter Valley is renowned for its dry table wines of Semillon and Shiraz. Brokenwood's production of these is further supported by premium grapes from as far afield as Orange, Beechworth and McLaren Vale.

Today, Brokenwood boasts an impressive array of premium quality wines, sourced from 'all the right regions, for all the right reasons', from the Graveyard Shiraz to the Cricket Pitch Sauvignon Blanc Semillon and Cricket Pitch Cabernet Sauvignon Merlot.

“Our philosophy is to produce wine that focuses on the unique regional characteristics of the Hunter Valley and premium wine regions throughout Australia.” Iain Riggs, Chief Winemaker & Managing Director, Brokenwood Wines.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★

Wines displaying a 5 star designation are recognised as being of proven quality provenance, our team has verified that the wine has been stored correctly from original purchase straight from the winery, documentation, where possible, has been sighted and cellaring conditions have been inspected. This wine generally comes from only the best and most respected of wine collectors in Australia.

★ ★ ★ ★

Wines displaying a 4 star designation have been cellared correctly as verified by the current owners. In general these wines have been purchased from retailers or traders and stored in cellared conditions from original purchase.

★ ★ ★

Wines displaying a 3 star designation are in good condition when we inspect and we are able to confirm some cellaring conditions but we are unable to verify all ownership and storage conditions of their history.

A wine displaying no stars doesn’t mean that there is a problem with the wine, it simply means that we have been unable to verify provenance, however a quality image is always available for the purchaser to make their own purchasing decisions.

Private Cellar wine is wine which has been stored for aging purposes in a Private Cellar.

Storing the wine and allowing it to age has the potential to improve the quality of the wine. While wine is perishable and capable of deteriorating, storing the wine can alter the aroma, colour, mouthfeel and taste of the wine in a way that may be more pleasing to the taster.
