Black Label is the iconic Wolf Blass blend. It has won the prestigious Jimmy Watson trophy an unprecedented four times since the first vintage in 1973, and more than 230 gold medals.

The Black Label principle is brilliantly simple; each vintage we craft the finest red blend from South Australian vineyards. It’s not about individual regions, vineyards or varieties, but rather fusing them together to create a wine far greater than the sum of its parts. It's about creating a wine with many layers of flavour in a complex composition of intense fruit characters, magnificent structure, a rich lustrous texture, long velvety tannins and a lingering palate.

Over 100 different parcels of fruit from super-premium South Australian vineyards are initially selected, narrowed down to the finest, most iconically Black Label in style. Kept separate throughout the winemaking and maturation process, it’s only when the final components are considered ‘finished’ that the master blender’s art is put to the ultimate test.

Predominately a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon and Shiraz, Black Label often includes a touch of Malbec or occasionally Merlot. Regional sourcing may also vary from year to year, although Langhorne Creek, the Barossa Valley and McLaren Vale tend to dominate most years.

Medium to full purple-red; both the bouquet and palate have an extra dimension of fruit complexity and depth, reflecting the fact that it is a blend of ten components selected from 160 separate high quality parcels earmarked for possible inclusion. The palate has a silky, supple smoothness, the oak evident but in no way excessive. The 53 per cent Cabernet Sauvignon component comes mainly from McLaren Vale, the 47 per cent Shiraz mainly from the Barossa, the balance from Langhorne Creek.

Aroma

Intense lifted blackcurrant fruit, layered with underlying notes of coffee, dark chocolate and hints of mint and eucalypt.

Palate

The palate is rich and full with spicy bramble fruit and plums, integrated with smoky oak and velvety tannins.

Food Matching

Cabernet Shiraz blends match well with rich red meat dishes, aged hard cheeses like Cheddar and Parmesan and Middle Eastern dishes.

Black Label Cabernet Sauvignon Shiraz Malbec is great with Roast Leg of Lamb with Fresh Mint Sauce; Chinese Beef with Black Bean; Slow Roasted Venison Shoulder with Rosemary and Soft Polenta; or Chocolate Fondants with Macerated Berries.

Wolf Blass Wines has grown from a humble tin shed to become one of the world's most successful and awarded wineries.

Wolf Blass was created in 1973 when Wolf started his own business, purchasing a 2.5 acre land holding with an old army shed outside Nuriootpa, at the northern end of the Barossa Valley.

In researching the name Bilyara, Wolf learned it was the Aboriginal name for "Eaglehawk" and given the eagle was also the national emblem of Germany, he decided his wines would carry the Eagle - a legacy that continues today and into the future.

Wolf Blass Wines won three consecutive Jimmy Watson Trophies with Black Label, generating substantial publicity and hype. In 1999, Wolf Blass Black Label made history, becoming the only wine to win the coveted Jimmy Watson Trophy an unprecedented four times.

From this time onwards, growth has been impressive and inspiring with Wolf Blass winning a grand total of more than 3,000 awards at national and international wine shows, including most recently, International Red Winemaker of the Year at the 2008 International Wine Challenge in London.

We take the time to individually inspect each bottle and photograph it so you know exactly what you are buying. All Private Cellar wine stored at GraysOnline is kept in a temperature controlled wine storage area. Any wine that doesn’t meet our quality standards will not be sold.

Wines displaying a 5 star designation are recognised as being of proven quality provenance, our team has verified that the wine has been stored correctly from original purchase straight from the winery, documentation, where possible, has been sighted and cellaring conditions have been inspected. Storing the wine and allowing it to age has the potential to improve the quality of the wine. While wine is perishable and capable of deteriorating, storing the wine can alter the aroma, colour, mouthfeel and taste of the wine in a way that may be more pleasing to the taster.
