Bottle No.AE909

Penfolds RWT Shiraz presents an admirable alternative to the multi-regional sourcing and American oak maturation that are hallmarks of Grange, expressing instead, single-region Barossa Valley Shiraz matured only in French oak. The initials RWT stand for ‘Red Winemaking Trial’, the name given to the project internally when developmental work began in 1995. Naturally, now no longer a ‘Trial’! RWT Shiraz was launched in May 2000 with the 1997 vintage. Its style is opulent and fleshy, contrasting with Grange, which is more muscular and assertive. RWT is made from fruit primarily selected for its aromatic qualities and fine texture rather than sheer intensity or power of flavour. The result is a wine that helps to redefine Barossa Shiraz at the highest quality level.

“How to best describe the 2010 RWT? In half a dozen words or less—beguiling and daring to be different.”

“And yet this remains an opulent, almost unctuous wine, with volume and density—reaffirming earlier-established 1990’s RWT Barossa credentials.” Peter Gago, Penfolds Chief Winemaker

Expert Reviews

Year in and year out there is an understated quietness to this wine that speaks volumes about the style, as everything is working together as one; the fruit, the oak, the tannins and the inherent complexity of some seriously old vine Barossa material shines through; freshness, vitality, harmony and ageworthy are just a few descriptors that do this excellent rendition of RWT justice. Rating 96 - Drink by 2050 - Ben Edwards, Wine Companion (JAN/2013)

Winery Tasting Notes

Notes Image

Colour

Deep dark red with purple on rim.

Aroma

Ascending waves of fruits, blueberry, crushed boysenberry and soaked damson plum, sensitively propelled by(oak-derived?) cedar and ginger. Beneath, roasted meats, juniper, sage and Chinese BBQ artefact. Expressive, elemental, ethereal, earthy.

Palate

Full-bodied, unevolved and youthful. Whilst Barossa textural generosity and richness is pre-supposed, this palate at this stage verges towards ‘essence’—although thankfully not via an alcohol or a buffedup concentration pathway… An emulsion of sarsparilla, chinotto, and mascarpone replete with ripe, grande tannins and acidity conspiring to maintain balance and dimension. Masses of fruits, berries, chocolate, and mocha.

Richness and power, with stature and charm.

Peak Drinking

2015 – 2035.

Food Matching

Berkshire pork belly, muntries, parsnip, wild fennel and vanilla lily flower.

Winery Profile

Australia's winemaking history of less than two hundred years is brief by European measures though, like Europe, punctuated by periods of extreme success and difficult times. From the earliest winemaking days Penfolds has figured prominently and few would argue the importance of Penfolds' influence on Australia's winemaking psyche.

Without the influence of Penfolds the modern Australian wine industry would look very different indeed. Sitting comfortably outside of fad and fashion, Penfolds has taken Australian wine to the world on a grand stage and forged a reputation for quality that is without peer.

Penfolds' reputation for making wines of provenance and cellaring potential might suggest a mantle of tradition and formality is the preferred attire of a company with so much history to defend. But to label Penfolds as simply an established and conventional winemaker, would be to confuse tradition with consideration and to overlook the innovative spirit that has driven Penfolds since its foundation, and continues to find expression in modern times.

If there is anything traditional about Penfolds, it is the practice of constantly reviewing the wines it already does well, and continuously evolving and refining styles as vineyards mature and access to ever older and more varied vineyard sites improves.

Penfolds RWT Shiraz is made with Barossa Valley shiraz matured in (this year) 80 percent new French oak. It was first released with the 1997 vintage, launched in 2000. Reviews of previous releases of Penfolds RWT shiraz can be found by clicking here.

This is a fresh, silken, seductive release. Blueberries, intense blackberry, and blue-faced oak. Fresh-tilled earth, coffee, soy. Voluptuous and generous and drawn with tremendously fine, strong chains of tannin. The tannin profile here sets it apart; this will age (very) long term. Gloriously engineered. Glorious length. Fresh, saucy new oak plays a key role, true to the history of this wine, but it’s hard to argue against the idea that this will age magnificently over the long term. Rating 95 - Drink 2018 - 2028+, Campbell Mattinson, Wine Front (APR/2013)

Deep garnet-purple in color, the 2010 RWT Shiraz is a little closed showing intense and youthful primary aromas of cassis, kirsch, cedar, prunes and a touch of mulberries. Rich, muscular, packed with flavor, it is full-bodied, concentrated and finishes long with oak still poking out. Very youthful still, it will drink from 2014 to 2026+. Rating 93+, Drink 2014 - 2026 - Lisa Perrotti-Brown MW, Wine Advocate (FEB/2013)
