A Dedicated Couple Living Their Winemaking Dream

New Zealand winemaker Emma Lowe and Chilean vineyard manager Marcelo Núñez travelled from Chile to the foothills of the Kaweka Ranges to establish what is now Monowai Estate. They chose a spectacular site on the banks of the Ngaruroro River in Crownthorpe — a cooler, higher altitude district of Hawke’s Bay known for producing vibrant, expressive wines.

Emma holds a winemaking degree from Adelaide University and has crafted wines across Australia, Switzerland, South Africa, France, Chile and New Zealand. Marcelo brings extensive experience in both viticulture and winemaking from Chile and New Zealand, and today oversees all vineyard operations.

The couple planted their first vines in 2002 and released their inaugural wine in 2005. By 2007, the Monowai label was born. The name reflects the single stretch of ocean — one water — that connects their two homelands across the Pacific.

Emma and Marcelo planted five varieties perfectly suited to their unique microclimate: Chardonnay, Pinot Gris, Sauvignon Blanc, Merlot and Pinot Noir. These vines are now well established and form the backbone of Monowai’s wines.

Emma built the winery on-site, drawing on modern technologies and her global winemaking experience. Today, Monowai processes around 220 tonnes of estate-grown fruit each year, producing a boutique range of wines exclusively from their 22-hectare vineyard.

Monowai Estate is the result of passion, perseverance, and a shared dream — a true expression of place crafted by two people deeply committed to their land and their craft.
