Wine Summary Image

Spanning from the North Para River on the western side of our Command vineyard to Cellar Door at the eastern end, we see a gradual increase in clay content which corresponds with a decrease in vigour over the vineyard. For this reason we harvest the Command fruit over several picks, aiming to achieve the perfect balance in each pick.

Using our tulip closed fermenters we are able take a portion of the fruit and hold for extended time on skins helping to deliver a parcel with exceptional length and depth with that long gentle extraction time on skins. In addition to this, we ferment parcels separately in open cement vats for 7-14 days. These parcels are pressed straight to oak, where they undergo malolactic fermentation and further maturation, before eventual barrel selection to decide the final Command blend. That is a big tasting complete with a plenty of robust discussion!

Expert Reviews

97 POINTS - KEN GARGETT, WINEPILOT

I’ve been looking forward to this wine, ever since I tasted the previous vintage – both are superb Barossa years... An opaque maroon, this is fresh and energetic, with good focus. There is quality oak, well into integration. The nose exhibits notes of chocolate, blackberries, florals, coffee beans, mocha, aniseed and plums. Ideally balanced with great length, the wine finishes with the silkiest of tannins. Perhaps more classically structured than the 21, which offered more plushness, but there is such promise here. A cracker. Twenty to twenty-five years of pleasure ahead. In the pantheon of great Barossa Shiraz, this is sensational value.

97 POINTS - ANDREW CAILLARD MW, VINTAGE JOURNAL BAROSSA GUIDE

Medium-deep crimson. Intense blackberry. Mocha spice aromas with hints of wax polish and marzipan. Supple and evolved blackberry, spice, mocha, espresso flavours, lovely mid-palate richness and plentiful chalky/ touch ferruginious tannins. Some cedarwood, roasted chestnut notes at the finish. Very classical.

95 POINTS - CAMPBELL MATTINSON, THE WINE FRONT

The balance here is impeccable. Indeed so too is the freshness, and the character. It tastes of redcurrant and fresh plums, fragrant herbs, cream and cedar, with wafts of bay leaves and/or peppercorns. But the note that really stands out here is a rust-like character, which extends both through the fruit and the tannin, and this note helps to give the wine both beauty and charm. Yes there’s some alcohol warmth but the wine carries it in its stride, and the finish is then beautifully well sustained.

95 POINTS - JAMESSUCKLING.COM

A well-shaped, focused, flavorful and driven shiraz with aromas of wild berries, dried herbs, fresh peppercorns and baking spices. Full-bodied with finely grained tannins. It’s fleshy yet in control. Generous fruit mingles with the spices on the linear, serious and driven palate. Long, flavorful, peppery finish.

95 POINTS - ANGUS HUGHSON, VINOUS

The 2022 Shiraz Command is exceptional. This is deceptively compact and composed yet rippling with ripe mulberry, blackberry, new leather and oak notes that are poised and precise in a claret style. There’s great strength and tension here. The powerful fruit still remains in its shell and is encased with structural, balanced tannins that will reward time in the cellar.

Winery Tasting Notes

Colour

Deep crimson

Aroma

Spiced red fruit with hints of spicy oak

Palate

A delicate balance of just ripe spiced plum and wooded berries. The tannin profile is very typical of our Command, subtle yet long, and there is a massive depth of tannin which speaks to our old vines nestled here in Nuriootpa, and the long ripening season they enjoyed.

Winery Profile

Elderton Wines is a small, family owned and operated winery, situated in the heart of the Barossa Valley. The Elderton vineyard, which was planted in 1894 by the Scholz family, was purchased by the Ashmead family in the late 1970's and started producing labelled bottled estate wine from the 1982 harvest.

It was well after a decade of hard work and toil that the winery shot to prominence in the early 1990's, after winning the prestigious Jimmy Watson Trophy at the 1993 Melbourne Wine Show. There has been an amazing amount of further wine show success including the World’s Best Shiraz Trophy at the 2000 London International Wine & Spirits Competition. Elderton has also enjoyed being the darling of the worlds wine press, with great endorsements given by James Halliday, Robert Parker, The Wine Spectator Magazine as well as countless others. Furthermore, in 2005, Elderton was named in the Top 100 Wineries in the World by Wine & Spirit Magazine.

The real strength behind the Elderton success is the ancient 72 acre Barossa Floor Vineyard, which produces fruit of the highest quality year in year out. Each block on the property is cherished but the two standouts are the Command Shiraz block (planted 1894) and the Ashmead Cabernet Sauvignon block (planted 1944).

The wines of Elderton are enjoyed worldwide for their amazing qualities which come through from varietal character, regional definition and the unique and robust personalities of the Elderton team. In 2011, Elderton celebrated its 30th vintage as a winery and the Ashmeads still believe that the best is yet to come.

Wines displaying a 5 star designation are recognised as being of proven quality provenance, our team has verified that the wine has been stored correctly from original purchase straight from the winery, documentation, where possible, has been sighted and cellaring conditions have been inspected. This wine generally comes from only the best and most respected of wine collectors in Australia.

★ ★ ★ ★

Wines displaying a 4 star designation have been cellared correctly as verified by the current owners. In general these wines have been purchased from retailers or traders and stored in cellared conditions from original purchase.

★ ★ ★

Wines displaying a 3 star designation are in good condition when we inspect and we are able to confirm some cellaring conditions but we are unable to verify all ownership and storage conditions of their history.

A wine displaying no stars doesn’t mean that there is a problem with the wine, it simply means that we have been unable to verify provenance, however a quality image is always available for the purchaser to make their own purchasing decisions.

Private Cellar wine is wine which has been stored for aging purposes in a Private Cellar.

Storing the wine and allowing it to age has the potential to improve the quality of the wine. While wine is perishable and capable of deteriorating, storing the wine can alter the aroma, colour, mouthfeel and taste of the wine in a way that may be more pleasing to the taster.
