Wine Summary Image

Bin 150 Marananga Shiraz is a sub-regional expression that is unmistakably Penfolds in character. Conceived from the ancient soils of Marananga, which lies very close to the centre of the Barossa Valley floor – slightly to the north and west, where warm dry conditions and rich red soils, provide the backbone to some of the region’s best known wines. Standing on its own two feet, this release delivers a contemporary Shiraz alternative, framed by a mix of oaks; French and American, old and new – crafted in

accordance with the traditional Penfolds method.

Winter rainfall in the Barossa Valley occurred as infrequent, light showers which resulted in low soil moisture and vines were in water deficit at the beginning of spring. Early budburst was noticeable and windy conditions during flowering were, in part, responsible for variable fruit set and lower than average yields come vintage. Frost risks had to be managed by our viticulture team and growers. Warm days were dispersed throughout October, November and in early January, contributing to an early start to the 2013 harvest and a relatively short, condensed vintage. Any January heat spikes were short lived and immediately followed by a mild reprieve. Dry and warm conditions, coupled with lower than average yields resulted in Shiraz showing strong, structural tannins, wines of great intensity and encouraging flavour.

Winery Tasting Notes

Notes Image

COLOUR: Mauve hue still at core. Bright.

NOSE: Marananga blue fruits immediately ascend. As do florals (violet). Another sub-regional marker - a glossy aromatic halo hovers above…a sheen of linseed/meal. Nougat, nutty (pecan) notes merge with oak – cloaked in a spicy/pastry crust garb. All now aromatically confirmed – Barossa; Marananga.

PALATE: Bright. At once, succulent/juicy/mouth-watering/ salivating…yet stylishly defined with a complex, layered structure, length. Initially terrine/corned beef/carpaccio/…. paté aspic/gelatine notes prevail, yet with air and time in glass darker characters arise – mocha, black jelly. Fine yet gripping tannins and minimal oak interference underpin the Bin 150 textural checklist.

PEAK DRINKING 2015 – 2035

Winery Profile

Australia's winemaking history of less than two hundred years is brief by European measures though, like Europe, punctuated by periods of extreme success and difficult times. From the earliest winemaking days Penfolds has figured prominently and few would argue the importance of Penfolds' influence on Australia's winemaking psyche.

Without the influence of Penfolds the modern Australian wine industry would look very different indeed. Sitting comfortably outside of fad and fashion, Penfolds has taken Australian wine to the world on a grand stage and forged a reputation for quality that is without peer.

Penfolds' reputation for making wines of provenance and cellaring potential might suggest a mantle of tradition and formality is the preferred attire of a company with so much history to defend. But to label Penfolds as simply an established and conventional winemaker, would be to confuse tradition with consideration and to overlook the innovative spirit that has driven Penfolds since its foundation, and continues to find expression in modern times.

If there is anything traditional about Penfolds, it is the practice of constantly reviewing the wines it already does well, and continuously evolving and refining styles as vineyards mature and access to ever older and more varied vineyard sites improves.

Gold & 96 Pts - Halliday Rating

A relatively recent addition to the Bin range, one that has always appealed to me. Full crimson-purple; the fragrant bouquet sends multiple, if not downright mixed, messages of red berries, spices and smoky oak; the vibrant palate is led by juicy, sweet fruit, before spicy oak and superfine tannins add their weight to the length and finish. An altogether superior wine. - 11 July 2021.
