Expert Reviews

Ten days later, the Selbachs picked their 2006 Zeltinger Sonnenuhr Auslese Rotlay from fruit that was almost entirely raisined in this sheltered site just above the water line and regularly shrouded in morning fog. The two previous harvests of this precious parcel had also been en bloc – in order as it were to preserve the essence of the vintage in a single site. So this year – when another approach was not an option – the crew was practiced in the task. Peaches, persimmons, vanilla cream, marzipan, mocha, and honey make for a strikingly rich display, yet there is clarity and refreshment as well. Selbach let the wine ferment to 9.5% alcohol to encourage body and structure and mitigate the superficial sweetness that encumbers many 2006 Auslesen – including at this address – and the approach succeeded brilliantly. The length of this wine alone – not to mention its complexity – demonstrates why it is one of Germany’s single greatest Riesling locations, and in 10-25 years, that demonstration will be even more convincing.

The harvest almost filled the month of October, but by the standards of this large estate with holdings stretching across four communes, that is (in Johannes Selbach’s words) “super quick” and volume was down 30% from the already small 2005 harvest. Musts were sometimes fined with bentonite but never with charcoal. “This is my year of superlatives,” says Selbach. “When I think of my children and their children, and about a wine one could open in a hundred years and say ‘Wow!’ one dreams of wines from great historical vintages like 1911, 1921, 1953 ... and that in one’s own lifetime one might experience and harvest wines that would number among them. For me, that’s 2006.” Selbach took an interest in Pinot Blanc for sparkling wine, since there are some promising old vines in cooler side locations of Zeltingen’s Schlossberg. But he now thinks the fruit will probably always be too ripe for that purpose, whereas the still results are themselves promising.- The Wine Advocate

Winery Tasting Notes

Notes Image

The **Selbach-Oster Zeltinger Sonnenuhr Rotlay Riesling-Auslese 2006** is a rich, complex wine with aromas of honeyed apricot, ripe peach, and petrol. On the palate, it offers luscious sweetness balanced by vibrant acidity, with flavors of stone fruit and floral notes. The finish is long and elegant, with a touch of minerality. A fantastic wine with aging potential, perfect for pairing with rich desserts.

Winery Profile

Our assets have much to do with our hands. Since several generations. Since 1660 in our family ownership, as a matter of fact. Our main treasure is simply what nature presents us with: excellent vineyard-sites in the heart of the Mosel region, old, ungrafted vines on steep, south-facing slopes planted on heat-retaining, mineral-rich, rocky slate soil. Granted, these "assets" bring various risks year-in - year-out... but also great opportunities. Most important, however, are the results.

Selbach-Oster Riesling vineyards lie on a 4-mile / 7 km stretch along the Mosel starting in Zeltingen, upstream to Wehlen, Graach and Bernkastel. Vines have been cultivated here since Roman times. Every single vineyard on that short stretch of river has its own special environment and microclimate—its terroir. Each single lot of wine in the cellar shows its own individual, complex "fingerprint". No single day is alike and each year, each vintage has its own unique character, its "signature". The grapes mature slowly in a very long, temperate growing season. All the above represent traditional "values" which we at Selbach-Oster cherish; we try to refine and preserve the liquid result in the bottle, the sleek, tall green Mosel-bottle. All this in order to present you with Riesling the way we like it: with elegance, complexity and depth of flavor. With the subtlety and fragrance of flowers and the intense mineral quality from our slate soils. With the taste of delicate fruit and a lingering, crisp finish. The way it has always been.

Wines displaying a 5 star designation are recognised as being of proven quality provenance, our team has verified that the wine has been stored correctly from original purchase straight from the winery, documentation, where possible, has been sighted and cellaring conditions have been inspected. This wine generally comes from only the best and most respected of wine collectors in Australia.

★ ★ ★ ★

Wines displaying a 4 star designation have been cellared correctly as verified by the current owners. In general these wines have been purchased from retailers or traders and stored in cellared conditions from original purchase.

★ ★ ★

Wines displaying a 3 star designation are in good condition when we inspect and we are able to confirm some cellaring conditions but we are unable to verify all ownership and storage conditions of their history.

A wine displaying no stars doesn’t mean that there is a problem with the wine, it simply means that we have been unable to verify provenance, however a quality image is always available for the purchaser to make their own purchasing decisions.

Private Cellar wine is wine which has been stored for aging purposes in a Private Cellar.

Storing the wine and allowing it to age has the potential to improve the quality of the wine. While wine is perishable and capable of deteriorating, storing the wine can alter the aroma, colour, mouthfeel and taste of the wine in a way that may be more pleasing to the taster.
