Wine Summary Image

A powerful, rich, and highly awarded full-bodied red.

This specific vintage achieved massive success, pulling in 5 stars from Winestate Magazine and scoring 95 points at the Wine Showcase Awards.

True to its sub-regional complexity, the Catkin is artfully blended from four distinct micro-climatic parcels across McLaren Vale: Whites Valley (for texture and depth), McLaren Flat (for lifted elegance), Blewitt Springs (for red fruit and menthol undertones), and Aldinga (for brooding dark fruits).

Aromas: A deep purple-hued pour revealing an intense, decadent bouquet of ripe black cherry, blueberry, and liquorice, alongside smoked meats, a dash of cracked black pepper, and hints of dried herbs and cedary spice.

Palate: Fully flavored, juicy, and unctuous. The mid-palate bursts with luscious red berry and rich dark savory fruit, supported by an undercurrent of dark chocolate and savory spice.

Structure: While powerful and deeply concentrated, it avoids feeling excessively heavy. Matured for 20 months in open fermenters and French oak barrels (both new and seasoned), it exhibits excellent structural integration with supple, mouth-coating tannins and a dry, lingering finish.

Expert Reviews

95 Pts - Halliday Rating/

The mound of flavour is high. Violet, blueberry and sweet plum flavours pump heartily through the palate, tips of mint, anise and dry spice swept along with them. Ripe, assertive tannin steps up to the task in appropriate volume. Every angle here is well covered. - Campbell Mattinson, 11 July 2021.

Winery Profile

The name Haselgrove has been synonymous with Australian wine for over 100 years.

Haselgrove is one of the old names of McLaren Vale and under new ownership it has set about returning the winery to its former glory.

Senior Winemaker Greg Clack has stamped a quality wine ethos in his team with the first and foremost goal to provide outstanding quality in all of Haselgrove wines. Steps have already been taken to up-grade the winery with equipment to better handle small batch winemaking.

We are in the process of expanding our barrel storage including the addition of a cool room for white barrel ferments.

The new owners of Haselgrove are all highly experienced wine men, they bring the passion of their Italian heritage and a desire to re-establish Haselgrove as a premium wine producer from McLaren Vale.

In Essence – Haselgrove Wines are taking a fresh, modern approach to winemaking, producing a range of wines that show distinct regional character, are well balanced and can be enjoyed by themselves or with a wide array of Australia's excellent fresh foods.

Provenance; “Place of origin; derivation”

  • The history of the ownership of an object, especially when documented or authenticated. Used for Artworks, Antiques, and Wine.
  • The records or documents authenticating such an object or the history of its ownership.

Whenever you buy wine there is an inherent risk, as wine is a perishable good regardless of whether it is sealed under cork or screwcap. At GraysOnline we minimise the risk to you by providing as much information as possible regarding the provenance of the wine we sell.

We take the time to individually inspect each bottle and photograph it so you know exactly what you are buying. All Private Cellar wine stored at GraysOnline is kept in a temperature controlled wine storage area. Any wine that doesn’t meet our quality standards will not be sold.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★

Wines displaying a 5 star designation are recognised as being of proven quality provenance, our team has verified that the wine has been stored correctly from original purchase straight from the winery, documentation, where possible, has been sighted and cellaring conditions have been inspected. This wine generally comes from only the best and most respected of wine collectors in Australia.

★ ★ ★ ★

Wines displaying a 4 star designation have been cellared correctly as verified by the current owners. In general these wines have been purchased from retailers or traders and stored in cellared conditions from original purchase.

★ ★ ★

Wines displaying a 3 star designation are in good condition when we inspect and we are able to confirm some cellaring conditions but we are unable to verify all ownership and storage conditions of their history.

A wine displaying no stars doesn’t mean that there is a problem with the wine, it simply means that we have been unable to verify provenance, however a quality image is always available for the purchaser to make their own purchasing decisions.

Private Cellar wine is wine which has been stored for aging purposes in a Private Cellar.

Storing the wine and allowing it to age has the potential to improve the quality of the wine. While wine is perishable and capable of deteriorating, storing the wine can alter the aroma, colour, mouthfeel and taste of the wine in a way that may be more pleasing to the taster.
