Winemaking

Grapes are harvested separately and picked early in the morning to preserve temperature and freshness. After de-stemming and crushing, the juice is kept on skins briefly — extracting the pale colour and softening the acidity — before fermentation in temperature-controlled conditions. No oak is used; the wine is made for early drinking.

Terroir: Côtes de Provence Sainte-Victoire

The Sainte-Victoire sub-appellation sits at the foot of the famous mountain painted endlessly by Paul Cézanne, roughly 25 km east of Aix-en-Provence. It received its own AOC designation in 2005 — the result of a 15-year campaign by 22 winemakers (including Mas de Cadenet) to have the area's distinctive character formally recognised.

Climate

Despite being in Provence, Sainte-Victoire has a continental rather than Mediterranean character. The Sainte-Victoire mountain and the Sainte-Baume range act as natural barriers, reducing rainfall and maritime influence. This creates hot, dry summers, cold winters, significant day-night temperature variation, and Provence's lowest annual rainfall — ideal for producing wines of concentration and finesse.

Soil

The superficial soil is composed of cobbles washed down from the Sainte-Victoire mountain. Approximately 60% pebbles and 40% clay, the terrain is poor and well-drained — conditions that stress the vine beneficially, producing low yields with intense flavour and natural structure. Underlying limestone drives bright acidity in the wines.

Vineyard

Mas de Cadenet's vineyards are situated on a south-facing plateau at 250 metres above sea level. This altitude and aspect extend the ripening season, allowing flavours to develop gradually while retaining the acidity that defines great Provence rosé.

The Brand

Quatre Vin — French for "four wines" — was founded in 2021 by four friends united by a passion for food, wine, and good times: TV personality and designer Oliver Proudlock and his wife Emma-Louise, together with entrepreneur Elliot Awin and his partner Paula Anton. The brand's debut release was this rosé, launched in May 2021.

Rather than building a winery from scratch, the four founders partnered with an established Provençal family estate — the Negrel family of Mas de Cadenet — bringing together lifestyle-brand energy and centuries of winemaking heritage. Since launch, Quatre Vin has expanded to include a rouge (red) and, in 2023, a blanc (white).

Winery Tasting Notes

Notes Image

Appearance

Exceptionally pale pink — the hallmark of Provence rosé. The restrained colour comes from brief, controlled skin contact after de-stemming and crushing, which also softens acidity while preserving freshness.

Aroma

The nose is delicate and inviting: freeze-dried strawberries and fresh stone fruit lead, with a light floral lift. The overall impression is clean and bright rather than weighty or overly perfumed.

Palate

Medium-bodied with lively acidity and a restrained fruitiness. Stone fruit (peach, apricot) and summer berries drive the palate. The Syrah component adds a subtle textural sophistication that gives the wine food-friendliness, while Grenache delivers red fruit warmth and Cinsault keeps the finish fresh and dry.

Finish

Clean, dry, and refreshing. The finish is crisp without being austere — characteristic of the Sainte-Victoire terroir's limestone-driven acidity.

Food Pairing

Grilled seafood, light pasta dishes, fresh salads, goat's cheese, charcuterie, or simply on its own in the sunshine. Its balanced structure makes it versatile across a meal as well as an excellent aperitif.
