Wine Summary Image

Bin 389 was often referred to as ‘Baby Grange’, in part because components of the wine are matured in the same barrels that held the previous vintage of Grange. First made in 1960 by the legendary Max Schubert, this was the wine that helped forge Penfolds reputation with red wine drinkers by combining the structure of cabernet sauvignon with the richness of shiraz. Exemplifying the judicious balance of fruit and oak, Bin 389 highlights the generous mid-palate Penfolds in known for.

Expert Reviews

Andrew Caillard MW 96

“Deep crimson… perfumed violet, praline, blackcurrant/blackberry aromas… fine chalky, al-dente tannins… lovely density, vinosity and flow.” Drink now–2045

Ken Gargett (Winepilot) 96

“Power, yes, but this is also effortlessly elegant. A triumph for the vintage… drinks beautifully over next fifteen years.

Dave Brookes (Halliday) 96

Winery Tasting Notes

Nose: Intricate dark fruit aromas layered with notes of plum, blackberry, Portuguese custard, cinnamon sugar, and pecan-spiced cake, complemented by savory hints of rosemary lamb and boot polish, underpinned by toasty oak and umami-like soy or cured meat.

Palate: Structured yet rich—vibrant red currant and cranberry, smooth vanilla sweetness, mouth-coating tannins, plus savory elements like black olive, orange zest, fennel, and olive. The finish leaves a vivid impression of power and elegance.

Winery Profile

Australia's winemaking history of less than two hundred years is brief by European measures though, like Europe, punctuated by periods of extreme success and difficult times. From the earliest winemaking days Penfolds has figured prominently and few would argue the importance of Penfolds' influence on Australia's winemaking psyche.

Without the influence of Penfolds the modern Australian wine industry would look very different indeed. Sitting comfortably outside of fad and fashion, Penfolds has taken Australian wine to the world on a grand stage and forged a reputation for quality that is without peer.

Penfolds' reputation for making wines of provenance and cellaring potential might suggest a mantle of tradition and formality is the preferred attire of a company with so much history to defend. But to label Penfolds as simply an established and conventional winemaker, would be to confuse tradition with consideration and to overlook the innovative spirit that has driven Penfolds since its foundation, and continues to find expression in modern times.

If there is anything traditional about Penfolds, it is the practice of constantly reviewing the wines it already does well, and continuously evolving and refining styles as vineyards mature and access to ever older and more varied vineyard sites improves.
