Bowen Estate celebrates its 50th anniversary this year. I still fondly remember one of Doug Bowen’s first wines, a 1976 Shiraz Cabernet, made from the first crop, which was an early entrant into my fledgeling cellar. Congratulations to the Bowen family, who are still producing some of the best value reds in the country. Very deep, shiny purple-red colour in the glass; lovely rich, ripe, stylish aromas of dark fruits, star anise and rich earthy compost allied with ripe herbal traces and a whiff of coconut. The palate is full-bodied and fleshy, with abundant supple fine-grained tannins and a long, long carry ending with a little alcohol warmth, well within balance. A sumptuous shiraz, profound and decadent, with glossy texture and great harmony. The 2024 Shiraz kicks off with a gorgeous colour and a fabulous mix of power and poise. Blackberry, just-crushed peppery spice and dried meats emerge with a veneer of quality oak. It has great impact and density of fruit with its ripe, earthy core of dark berry flavour riding through to a strong finish punctuated by drying tannins. Big, but beautifully balanced with a long future ahead.

A plush and supple rendition of great Coonawarra shiraz, a wine built on blackberries and dark cherries, with a grating of chocolate and warm spices generously scattered throughout. The oak seems a little eager to please at first but settles back into the wine with time in the glass. There’s a reason this wine has a legion of loyal fans.
