Expert Reviews

95 Points “Another example of a winemaker playing with his food. Rob has fermented and matured, over ten months on lees, the fruit here in older French puncheons. The wine has picked up a little more colour than some and is a deeper yellow. The nose gives us an enticing array of flavours with apricot skins, figs, lemon curd and fresh citrus. There is a chalky/minerally backing and the wine exhibits bright acidity, balance, a fine focus, drive and length. A long and lingering finish here, with intensity maintained for the full journey. Impressively persistent. Enjoy over the next ten to fifteen years. Love it.” Winepilot, Ken Gargett

94 Points “The name refers to the level of natural residual sweetness which Rob has left in the wine, balancing it with the vibrant acidity. Don’t be concerned that you will find yourself with something too sweet, it is barely an off-dry style, but it will be a great wine for a wide range of dishes. Pale lemon in colour, the nose offers florals, with frangipanis coming to mind, spices, passionfruit hints and an appealing riverstone backing. That very gentle sweetness runs the length, but is so well balanced, that the impression is of a wine of freshness and expression. This is a top example of this style and should continue to drink enticingly for at least the next six to ten years.” Winepilot, Ken Gargett

94 Points, “It opens with a lifted delivery of grapefruit and musk aromas and flavours. It then toes a tremulous balance between the seductive sweetness (due to the 21g/L residual sugar) and tangy, crisp natural acid. It emulates the Germanic / Alsatian halb-trocken style, albeit with New World generosity of varietal characteristics and palate length. This Castle Rock Estate RS21 Riesling is one of current vibrancy, freshness and easily enjoyable.” Winelines, Gilbert Labour

93 Points “RS21 stands for 21 grams of residual sugar per litre and this Riesling from Castle Rock Estate straddles the line between sweetness and acid with aplomb. Ideally matched with spicy dishes, this is a very good drink. A wine with respectable flow, white flowers, limes and green apples provide the main highlights. Some grapefruit ripples through the core to add some detail. This style of wine has been honed over a number of years and the final result oozes delish. A whip crack of acid cleanses the mouth bringing the mouth to water. It’s very well done.” Qwine Reviews

Winery Profile

Rob Diletti is a quiet achiever who crafts very fine wines for Castle Rock Estate and other products. The hallmark of his style is a light touch and purity of fruit, resulting in wines that taste effortless and genuine. - Huon Hooke

The wines from Castle Rock Estate were made under contract at Alkoomi winery from 1986 to 2000. The next phase of growth was to make our wines on site at Castle Rock Estate. After the 2000 vintage we decided to bite the bullet and proceed with plans to build a 200 tonne winery on the estate. Despite having nearly twelve months, it was only just completed on time, the first tanks arriving only four days before the first grapes arrived.

Planned by Robert and Angelo the winery building makes use of the natural slope of the land and is built on two levels. The grapes are crushed and fermented on the upper level, then gravity fed into the press below, thus doing away with the need to pump the must. This is very important for Riesling as it reduces skin and seeds which give the juice hard phenolics.

The upper level houses four six tonne red fermenters. When the reds have finished fermenting, the press can be positioned below and filled simply by opening the door! The winery is a blend of age old, proven techniques and some equipment which is state of the art. The press, de-stemmer/crusher and refrigeration system were bought brand new so we are sure of their ability performance and reliability. The use of gravity ensure we are not over reliant on machines and we believe we have the right balance to maximise quality.

The wine is bottled on site by a portable bottling line which is set up on the back of a semi-trailer. This is an ideal arrangement as we aren't sending the wine away in a bulk tanker and we don't need to outlay huge capital for a bottling line. Bottling on site means we can be sure that the quality and freshness of the wine is maintained.
