Wine Summary Image

Named for one of South Wairarapa’s earliest sheep stations, Dry River rests on the very arid, gravelly, free-draining soils near the Ruamahanga River, an area known as the Martinborough Terrace. Dry River was founded in 1979 by Dr Neil and Dawn McCallum and was one of Martinborough’s first wineries. The McCallums’ dream was to produce unique, high-quality wines that age beautifully. It’s been our mission ever since. All wines are estate-grown over approximately 12ha on the Dry River Estate, Craighall and Lovat Vineyards.

...long, lean and deceptively powerful'

96 Points

A restrained nose with cool-toned aromas of lime leaf, wet stone and subtle white flowers. The palate is taut, tangy and compact. The mid-weight grapefruit, green apple, yoghurt and oyster-shell flavours are trimmed in dry, chalky tannins and driven by a wave of salty acidity. Excellent definition and clarity of expression right to the finish before a whiff of flint and smoky wood makes an appearance. This tightly coiled, modern, cool-climate chardonnay is long, lean and deceptively powerful, disguised by sleekness and elegance. It can be cellared confidently for a decade at least.

'It’s graceful, elegant and quiet. '

95 Points

The 2023 Chardonnay is nutty and elegant, and the fruit is plump but restrained; it courses from the mid-palate and through the finish with all the seamlessness of scissors cutting through wrapping paper with nary a snag. This is lightweight but all in proportion and balance, and I find the quiet nature of it to be a beautiful thing. It’s graceful, elegant and quiet. 13% alcohol, sealed under Diam.

'Lovely to drink now.'

94 Points

This chardonnay has a solid structure and pretty fruit with dried apples, light pie crust and some nuts on both the nose and the palate. It’s medium-bodied with an open palate and a flavorful finish. Lovely to drink now.

Winery Tasting Notes

Crushed shell, specifically reminiscent of green mussels. While some might say oyster shell, it's not quite that. Saline, yes. Sundried lime zest dances in the background. A reduction of coal dust, saffron, and Belgian spice promotes the essence of Craighall’s stones, tightening the parameters and focusing the power for length rather than width. Precise. Crème brûlée, lemon honey, and yellow peach ripple across the palate, while pure acidity flows like a swift stream, elongating the palate and experience. White florals, particularly alyssum, make a delightful appearance. A hint of macadamia graces the finish, complemented by a refreshing green crunch and phenolic notes—like the delicate skin of a cucumber. A richness that is utterly moreish. In its infancy, you’ll enjoy its electric acidity and moreish, long finish. With extended aging—up to 15 years—it will unlock even greater complexity and depth, rewarding your patience.
