Wine Summary Image

Named for one of South Wairarapa’s earliest sheep stations, Dry River rests on the very arid, gravelly, free-draining soils near the Ruamahanga River, an area known as the Martinborough Terrace. Dry River was founded in 1979 by Dr Neil and Dawn McCallum and was one of Martinborough’s first wineries. The McCallums’ dream was to produce unique, high-quality wines that age beautifully. It’s been our mission ever since. All wines are estate-grown over approximately 12ha on the Dry River Estate, Craighall and Lovat Vineyards.

Expert Reviews

Intense Riesling with layers of ripe tree fruit...

96 Points

Intense riesling with layers of ripe tree fruit, citrus fruit and savoury characters supported by deliciously tangy acidity. Dry but not excessively austere and with an appealingly lengthy finish. An excellent result from a challenging vintage.

The Real Review,

Textured, robust but svelte...

96 Points

The 2022 Craighall Vineyard Riesling leads with salted lime, cheesecloth, apple skin and river stones on the nose. Graphite and even pencil lead ripple the edges of the aromatics. In the mouth, the wine is waxy and spiced, with lanolin and white pepper. It’s totally textured and sort of robust but svelte. There’s the full spectrum of experience here – flavour, aromatics and texture (the most important). It’s a powerful, driven wine. Excellent and poised. Seven grams per litre of residual sugar remain in this wine, with 50% in neutral oak for six months and no lees. This is a lovely wine. A beauty. Race and pace. 12% alcohol, sealed under Diam.

Winery Tasting Notes

The 2022 Dry River Pinot Gris is lavish and charming. Ripe aromatics of peach, red-petal, ginger spice and nougat carry into the concentrated palate with flavours of pistachio, mandarin and warm cream. The palate remains broad and generous, finishing with a slight lift of cooling alcohol and fine phenolic tension.
