Named for one of South Wairarapa’s earliest sheep stations, Dry River rests on the very arid, gravelly, free-draining soils near the Ruamahanga River, an area known as the Martinborough Terrace. Dry River was founded in 1979 by Dr Neil and Dawn McCallum and was one of Martinborough’s first wineries. The McCallums’ dream was to produce unique, high-quality wines that age beautifully. It’s been our mission ever since. All wines are estate-grown over approximately 12ha on the Dry River Estate, Craighall and Lovat Vineyards.

Subtle crisp pear, roasted almond and flaky pastry aromas reluctantly lift from the glass. The palate is silky with an off- dry sweetness underpinning the mid-weight, subtle fruit. More spice develops towards the back with noticeable tart acidity which outlasts the fruit, giving a sherbet-like quality. A leaner, more shaded style of pinot gris with plenty of sophistication even if it is on the lighter side. This is still a bit closed today and will gain some weight in the mid-term.

The 2023 Pinot Gris leads with lemon barley, nashi pear, almond meal, green apples and a profusion of white spring flowers. The wine is plump, soft and feathered with texture. It’s a lovely wine that comes highly recommended. 13% alcohol, sealed under Diam.

Celebrating the cooler 2023 season, this Pinot Gris embodies elegance and clarity with moderate alcohol and a balanced acidity-sugar interplay, elevating our signature depth while enhancing purity and controlled viscosity. Notes of poached peaches, croissant, warm cream, hazelnut, vanilla, hot cotton, pear, and jasmine flower. The wine's journey offers explorative length, powered by harmonious acids and ripe skin flavanols, shaping a long slender skeleton. The fruit exudes confidence, and its lusciousness unfolds, culminating in a tantalising blend of ripe autumnal fruit, cream, pastry, and citrus zest. Vibrant, this wine will evolve and reward patience for a further 10 years.
