Medium to full bodied with a lively, intense purple colour. Black cherry, rapsberry and fresh, spicy flavours dominate the palate with a vibrant, fresh acidity that make the wine a wonderful example of the modern, balanced style of Hunter Valley shiraz.
THE STORY OF SINGLE VINEYARD RANGE
The same soil, same rainfall and same temperatures of a single vineyard produce a consistency of flavour throughout the wine. Our Single Vineyard wines are only made in years when nature contrives to produce fruit of such outstanding quality that our winemakers will set parcels aside to be separately bottled. In 1993, Bruce Tyrrell struck a deal with the Stevens family to use two of their iconic vineyards. It was, and still is, a deal sealed by a handshake. With some planted in 1867, these may be the oldest producing vines in the Hunter
Gold & 96 Points - James Halliday, Published 01 August, 2019
A radically different bouquet with aromas of black fruits, black olive, French oak and earth leads into a vibrant dark berry palate. A truly fascinating wine, at the moment polarising opinions. It does have one more trick up its sleeve: a mouthwatering, sweet and sour (in the best sense) finish and aftertaste.
Vineyard
The grapes for this wine come from the Stevens family owned Old Hillside vineyard in Pokolbin. The vineyard contains the Old Patch, which was planted in 1867 and is the oldest producing vineyard in NSW. This wine is made from the younger vines on the vineyard which are at a mature age of 50 years.
Vintage Conditions
The 2017 vintage was one of the best in recent memory and has produced wines of the highest quality. Solid rains in winter and spring meant the vines had constant access to water and the warmer weather in the new year meant all of the fruit was in near perfect condition and ripeness when it was harvested.
Winemaker’s Notes
Fermentation took place in stainless steel open top vats which took approximately 10 days. The wine was then transferred into mostly newer French oak casks (2,700Lt) for maturation until bottling in May 2018.
Tasting Notes
Medium to full bodied with an intense purple colour. Black cherry, raspberry and a hint of spice dominate the palate with a fresh acidity and minimal oak that make the wine a wonderful example of modern Hunter Valley shiraz.
English immigrant Edward Tyrrell established Tyrrell's Wines in 1858 in the lee of the Hunter Valley's Brokenback Range, New South Wales. This land has become recognised as home to some of the Hunter Valley regions finest vineyards, and the basis for development of one of Australia's most successful privately owned wine companies.
Today, Tyrrell's are a truly national wine company, premium vineyards extend from their legendary home in the Hunter Valley to other distinguished grape growing regions of Australia including McLaren Vale in South Australia and Heathcote in Victoria.
Fourth generation family member and Managing Director, Bruce Tyrrell heads this winemaking company that boasts well established, popular and highly recognisable wine brands that are exported to over 30 countries worldwide. His children, the fifth generation of the Tyrrell family, are involved in the family business, illustrating that this iconic Hunter Valley winery will continue to be Australian owned well into the future.
Tyrrell's Wines was awarded Winery Of The Year by James Halliday, Australian Wine Companion Edition 2010.
