Meshach Burge was my Great Grandfather, the man who started the Burge Winemaker tradition. Aged 11, he came to the Barossa Valley from “Hillcot”. In Wiltshire, England, wioth his family establishing a thriving viticultural, wheat and sheep property near Lyndoch. In the late 1860’s, under his fathers watchful eye, Meshach began winemaking.

In tribute, my finest Shiraz has been selected to bear his name. Fruit, handpicked form 80 year old vines from my Filsell Vineyard to produce a very full-bodied wine. Matured in new American oak hogsheads for two years, then bottled, it was cellar matured for a further year prior to release.

Rating 95 - James Halliday - Published on 11 Jun 2013, Australian Wine Companion

Full crimson-purple; from the estate's 85-year-old Filsell Vineyard, the wine matured for two years in new American and French oak hogsheads, and a further two years in the cellar prior to release. Picked before the heatwave, it is an incredibly rich and plush shiraz, with black fruits, oak and dark chocolate all competing for attention. Will surely outlive its cork, hence a shorter drink-to date.

Winery Tasting Notes

Colour

The 2008 Meshach shows typical depth of colour, resembling the colour of black plums and highlighted with a vibrant purple hue.

Aroma

There are intense aromas of blackberry and blueberry fruits, liquorice, vanilla bean and dark chocolate.

Palate

The nose leads to a multi-layered palate of blackberries and sweet and savoury spices with amazing mid-palate weight and powerful tannins.

Concentrated, yet finely balanced, this wine continues the proud history of Meshach.

Cellaring Potential

As with previous vintages, the elegant 2008 vintage should be enjoyed on special occasions and will appeal to the collector in you and allows you to cellar confidently for 20 years or more.

Winery Profile

Grant Burge is a fifth-generation Barossa Vigneron. Throughout his career, Grant has been one of the most respected and innovative forces in the Australian wine industry. The history of the Burge family and their long association with winemaking in the region can be traced back to March 1855, when noted tailor John Burge immigrated to the Barossa from Hillcot, near Pewsey in Wiltshire, England with his wife Eliza and their two sons.

Grant Burge Wines was formed in 1988 by Grant and his wife Helen, and is located in the heart of the Barossa Valley on the banks of Jacobs Creek and is still proudly family owned.

The fruit for this Iconic Shiraz is carefully handpicked from the Filsell Vineyard, where the vines are nearing 100 years old. Smaller parcels are also sourced from even older premium vines in the Barossa to add further complexities to the wine.

Meshach is a highly, concentrated, generous Barossa style with a ripe, dense palate packed with fruit, pronounced tannins and seasoned by American oak. Maturation programme is identical to Grange. Great potential for longevity.

Rating 96+ - Lisa Perrotti-Brown, Wine Advocate #205, Feb 2013

Deep garnet-purple in color, the 2008 Shiraz Meshach shows off a very spicy nose redolent of sandalwood, black olives and dried berries with fruit cake, black licorice and potpourri scents. Full-bodied, it is rich and very spicy with some oak poking through, a crisp acid line and medium-firm, velvety tannins to frame the long finish. It is approachable now but will drink to 2024+.

Meshach is the flagship wine named after Grant's grandfather. -I was looking for a name that had something to do with longevity,- says Grant. -My grandfather lived for 99 years and 9 months.- The wine predominately comes from Filsell vineyard's old vines that were planted in the 1920s. Made to last 20-plus years, it sees 20-22 months of oak and is released with five years of age. Originally aged in American oak, Grant found it too sweet, so he changed to a 20% French oak and 80% American oak regime in 1998. The 1988 was the first vintage and in 2007 none was made.
