Winery Tasting Notes

Appearance

Medium to deep ruby-purple with vibrant youthful hues. Bright and energetic in the glass, showing excellent clarity and concentration.

Aroma

Lifted and complex, displaying aromas of blackberry, satsuma plum, dark cherry, and raspberry intertwined with black pepper, anise, violets, dried herbs, and warm spice. Subtle notes of sage, rosemary, earth, and cedar contribute additional regional character.

Palate

Medium- to full-bodied with a juicy core of blackberry, plum, and red berry fruit supported by layers of pepper, licorice, spice, and savory herbs. The blend's varieties contribute both richness and freshness, while fine-grained tannins and lively acidity provide structure and balance. The finish is long, vibrant, and spicy, lingering with notes of dark fruit, herbs, and subtle earthiness.

Winery Profile

Henschke is one of the longest established family names in the Barossa and the Australian wine industry. Johann Christian Henschke first planted vines in Keyneton in 1861, producing his first commercial vintage in 1868.

The tradition of quality winemaking has passed down through the generations – today seeing Stephen Henschke and his wife, Prue, as winemaker and viticulturist respectively.

Awarded "International Red Winemaker of the Year" in 1996 at the London Wine Show, Stephen and Prue were in 2006, awarded Gourmet Traveller WINE magazine's "Winemaker of the Year" in recognition of winemaking excellence in both red and white wines. These Awards recognise the consistent and continuing success of this remarkable couple.

Prue has, for the last 18 years, explored and now employs both organic and biodynamic strategies to maximise the potential for the fruit from these unique vineyards to fully express their individual terroirs.
