Expert Reviews

Very aromatic, with white peaches and orchard blossom lifted by a touch of sourdough and wet clay. Medium-bodied, with brisk acidity setting the tone, subtle and delicate in feel with crisp freshness running through to a long, precise finish. Drink or hold. Screw cap.

James Suckling, JamesSuckling.com, August 2026

Hailing from the exceptional 2025 growing season, the 2025 Estate Chardonnay leads initially with toasty/pencilly oak notes; however, the fruit on the palate is where the quality of the vintage is on show. Here we have yellow peach, sea salt, toasted sage leaf (even bay), quince, fig and white flowers. The acidity is prodigious, and this serves as a prop in the middle of the palate, providing real tension and fierceness to the otherwise ripe fruit. This is a very good wine, and the length through the finish is impressive. 13.6% alcohol, sealed under screw cap. Drink 2026 - 2035.

Erin Larkin, Wine Advocate, September 2026

Kumeu's benchmark Chardonnay is a hit again in 2025. Loaded with ripe orchard fruit on the nose, apricots, peaches and white plums burst through with subtle sweet wood smoke. The palate has more struck-match smoke and baking spice, together with that sweet peachy fruit. Broad and gently smoky, the tang of acid keeps everything in check. Already delicious, this will drink well over the coming decade.

Winery Tasting Notes

Aroma: Highly aromatic and fragrant, leading with ripe orchard fruits, white peaches, and apricot alongside lifted notes of sourdough, orchard blossom, and wet clay.

Palate: Rich and layered, seamlessly blending a core of sweet peachy fruit and quince with complex notes of smoked almond, baking spice, sea salt, and toasted sage. Initial passes show a refined touch of pencilly, struck-match wood smoke.

Structure: Medium-bodied and substantial. It features prodigious, brisk acidity that slices through the fruit ripeness, offering a long, precise finish characterized by a fresh lime rind and pineapple "zing".

Winery Profile

At Kumeu River wines, our winemaking philosophy can be summarised in a single word. Quality. From the vines to the wineglass, every drop of Kumeu River wine is a blend of tradition, innovation, and dedication to both the science and the art and of winemaking.

Kumeu River's Chardonnays are our most recognised wine and have received international accolades and awards. We have invested heavily in the development of our Chardonnays over the past three decades, and it is very rewarding to see them continue to gain recognition and respect from highly regarded wine judges and reviewers.

An important part of the winemaking process of our best Chardonnays is barrel fermentation in a blend of new and old French oak barrels. This process draws out the flavour nuances that are so crucial to these fine wine styles. Only indigenous wild yeasts are used to further enhance the texture and complexity and this is also the case with our tank fermented Chardonnays and Pinot Gris.

Pinot Noir and Merlot are initially fermented with wild yeast for an extended period in stainless steel tanks before being matured in oak barrels to enhance the development of bouquet and soften the tannin structure of the palate.

Although always common in red wines, malolactic fermentation was not usually practiced in white wine making 30 years ago. Michael Brajkovich introduced this style of fermentation in the early 1980's. It is a natural process which biologically reduces wine acidity and complexes the flavour. The result is a much better acid balance and improved drinkability. Winemaking has been a part of the Brajkovich family history for more than half a century. Our winery has evolved over this time to produce a range of varieties that are reflective of the natural attributes of our land and also our family's dedication to producing wines of quality and value. We trust that you'll enjoy drinking our wines as much as we enjoy making them!
