Wine Summary Image

Halliday describes Lindsay as having “an exceptional gift for winemaking,” and describes his wines as being of “the highest quality, with a distinguished pedigree.” An amazing achievement given he has had no formal education in winemaking. In the James Halliday Australian Wine Companion 2007, Paringa Estate was awarded ‘Australian Winery of the Year’. This was akin to being made captain of the Australian cricket team for Lindsay, and he hasn’t looked back since.

2019 Langton’s James Halliday Chardonnay Challenge, Mornington Peninsula Regional Champion, 95 Points

Winery Tasting Notes

2018 was an outstanding vintage. Yields were generous, and all the varieties are of exceptional quality. The fruit for this wine came from our ‘Estate’ vineyard, and our Callanan’s Road vineyard. The fruit was handpicked, whole bunch pressed, and the unclarified juice was fermented in French oak puncheons (35% new). Initially it was stirred monthly in barrel, to build weight and complexity. It did not go through malolactic fermentation.

The nose is complex and intriguing, with delicately nuanced aromas of citrus and white nectarine, with appealing sulphide and nutty barrel ferment notes. The wine has good palate weight, racy acid and excellent length.

Winery Profile

Paringa Estate winery was established by owner/winemaker Lindsay McCall in 1985.

The home property has 10 acres (4.2 ha.) of vines planted with Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, Shiraz and Pinot Gris. The current winery was built in 1998, and houses an outstanding a la carte restaurant on the upper level. In 2008 Paringa Estate owned/leased 55 acres (22 ha.) of vines and processed 220 tonnes of fruit which produced 16,000 cases of wine.

Paringa Estate is one of the most awarded wineries in Australia, particularly for Pinot Noir and Shiraz.
