The Champagne Guide 2020-2021

93 Points

In the past, Extra Brut was aged a year longer, but now that Réserve Brut has moved from three to four years on lees, Extra Brut has actually done the reverse, so as to maintain the right balance between acidity and drinkability. Extra Brut would typically come in a point ahead of Réserve Brut in my ratings. Now this, too, has flipped. The 2014 base delivers an Extra Brut of contrasts, juxtaposing the purity of crunchy grapefruit tang with the integration of biscuit and spice. Prominent, fine salt minerality draws out a crisp finish of clean, focused acid line and great persistence.

Winery Tasting Notes

The golden colour, dense and shining, is sprinkled with thousands of tiny bubbles. The nose displays refined and complex notes of clove flowers and rose aromas developing into hints of bread crumbs, yeast and citrus fruit which as they mingle, form a lively and fresh body. On the palate, the first attack, straight and fine as an arrow is surprising, compared to the mature and concentrated nose. But this firm texture seems to act as a chisel enhancing a sumptuous wine, well-structured and fine. The aftertaste develops subtle aromas of honey and cloves giving the wine more depth and contributing to its good length.

Winery Profile

Founded by Pol Roger in 1849 and succeeded by his sons, Maurice and Georges. Now into the fourth generation with Christian Pol Roger and Cristian de Billy at the helm the house now owns around 85 hectares, mostly around Epernay including Grand Crus Cramant, Chouilly and Avize on the Cotes de Blancs and Ambonnay, Bouzy & Verzy on the Montagne de Reims. Generally Pinot dominant, the range of wines from the Non-Vintage cuvées through to the stellar Cuvée Sir Winston Churchill show consistency of house style and a pedigree that is the envy of many other grand marques.
