Wine Summary Image

Chardonnay was extensively planted on our vineyard when it was first established. As wine styles have changed we have proactively removed and updated our Chardonnay blocks with improved varietal selections. The fruit for Envoy is taken from a unique corner of one of our original Chardonnay blocks, 'B Block.' 'B Block' is home to five Burgundian clones of Chardonnay. The soil structure gives the best of both worlds - structure and fatness from the more complex top soil, and fruit definition from the free draining nature of the underlying gravel.

Expert Reviews

"Bright, even straw-yellow colour, pale on edge. This has a powerfully rich nose of citrus and peach fruit with a complex overlay of creamy, buttery, nutty MLF and oak aromas that unfold revealing smoke, toast and flinty minerals. Full-bodied, but elegantly proportioned, a complext flavour amalgam of citrus fruits, butterscotch, nuts and toast fills the palate, and is supported by an underlying alcohol drive with fine acid cut. The mouthfeel has a soft robustness and fulsome presence, and detailed nuances of nutty, oxidative elements emerge with smoke and toast that carry through to a long, dry finish. This is a fulsome and complex flavoured Chardonnay featuring citrus, cream and nutty flavours. Match with roasted poultry and pork dishes over the next 4-5+ years." Winery Profile

Spy Valley Wines is situated on the sunny southern side of Marlborough's Wairau Valley, nestled on the terraces of the Omaka river are the vineyards of Johnson Estate.

Bryan and Jan Johnson established the first of their 380 acres of estate vineyards in 1993. Pioneers in what was then a Marlborough sub region, the Lower Waihopai development continued with fruit being grown and sold to other wine companies.

From vintage 2000 wine was produced and sold under the Spy Valley label. The brand name SPY VALLEY® is derived from the presence of a satellite communications monitoring station (spy base) nearby, part of the Echelon Global Network.

The Envoy range of wines was released in 2007 and represents small parcel wine production from specific vineyard sites off Johnson family estate vineyards. The wines are vineyard designated and represent winemaker interpretations of site and vintage.

This distinguished wine is estate grown in the Waihopai Valley, hand-picked, fermented with indigenous yeasts and lees-aged in French oak barriques (mostly seasoned) for up to 18 months. The 2009 vintage is still tight and youthful. Barrel-fermented and lees-aged for 18 months, it is vibrant, with deep grapefruit-like flavours, slightly mealy and toasty, fresh acidity and a finely scented bouquet. It should be long-lived. Rating 4 1/2 Stars - Michael Cooper's Buyer's Guide to New Zealand Wines 2013
