Wine Summary Image

There are few Australians who will forget the 2019/2020 summer as bushfires burnt across the Eastern seaboard after a dry winter and spring. Thankfully there were no fires in central Victoria, and although it was smoky at times in Nagambie Lakes, Tahbilk fruit was not affected by smoke taint. The dry winter and spring had our vineyard staff diligently monitoring soil moisture and irrigating when necessary. January and February saw temperatures fluctuating from blazing hot 40 degrees plus days to very mild 20-degree days. Initially the very hot days seemed to slow the ripening but, similar to recent vintages, we commenced picking in early February. The unforgiving season continued through harvest, with tropical storms resulting in weekly rainfall that, whilst irritating to the Vineyard and Winery crews, was not enough to significantly impact yields or initiate disease. All varieties came in with excellent colour and flavour and 2020 will be a vintage of very good whites and terrific reds – not unusual for a dry season.

Expert Reviews

Bronze & 87 Pts - Haliday Rating.

Available to Tahbilk Wine Club members only. Riesling has long been grown at Tahbilk, producing an every-person kind of wine with widespread appeal, intended for early consumption. It jumps out of the glass with riesling appeal: lime, citrus, apple, grapefruit pith dancing to the tune of racy acidity. Still early days, but developing a nice waxy texture on the palate. - Jeni Port, 13 August 2021.

Winery Tasting Notes

"Fruit intensity is the hallmark of Estate releases from the 2020 vintage with Marsanne and Riesling the standout Whites. This latest Riesling release is typically floral and citrusy with a lemon/lime juice sparkling acidity that sears and refreshes across the palate. It is this acidity that will hold it in good stead for further richness and complexity to develop over a further eight to ten years." - Alister Purbrick ~ Fourth Generation CEO and Winemaker.

Winery Profile

Established in 1860 Tahbilk is one of Australia's most beautiful & historic wineries. Located in the Nagambie Lakes region of central Victoria (120kms north of Melbourne), one of the nation's premium viticultural areas, the property comprises some 1,214 hectares of rich river flats with a frontage of 11 kms to the Goulburn River and 8 kms of permanent backwaters & creeks.

The vineyard comprises 200 hectares of vines including the French Rhone Valley whites of Marsanne, Viognier & Roussanne; the Rhone reds - Shiraz, Grenache & Mourvedre; along with traditional varieties such as Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Chardonnay, Riesling, Semillon, Sauvignon Blanc & Verdelho.

Vineyard plantings extend back to Tahbilk's founding with original pre-phylloxera Shiraz vines still surviving from 1860 - an eponymous wine produced from them since 1979.

Tahbilk is further blessed with an abundance of further "old vine" plantings including Shiraz from 1933 (the prime source for Tahbilk's 'Eric Stevens Purbrick' Shiraz releases), Cabernet Sauvignon back to 1949 and Marsanne from 1927 (a "sister" white release to the 1860 Vines Shiraz produced from them).

Harvest commences in early March and continues for five to six weeks with approximately 1,600 tonnes (red & white) grapes processed.Total production is over 100,000 cases with just over 20% being exported to the key markets of U.S.A., United Kingdom, Canada, New Zealand, Switzerland and the Scandinavian countries.
