Wine Summary Image

After many years of dry winters we received average to above average rains through the 2016 winter and spring. The grapevines responded, growing vivid green canopies and setting good crop levels. A temperamental spring saw up and down temperatures and there were many ‘Four seasons in a day’ events, and warmish rainy days. The latter caused anxiety for our vineyard managers, with the potential for mildew to develop. However good management and diligent monitoring allowed us to keep the vineyard disease free. Summer seemed transient but we did have three balmy weeks through March with ripening continuing at a steady pace. The fine, albeit slightly cooler, weather lingered on in April and harvest continued steadily with very few issues but thankful that the weather did hold. Vintage 2018 will be remembered as having a traditional late start with the very even and steady ripening resulting in distinct varietal flavours with bright fruit and elegant, fine structures.

Expert Reviews

Silver & 93 Pts - Haliday Rating.

Dark red with garnet hues. This is fresh and lively with blackcurrant and plum to the fore, spice from oak maturation later, and in complete balance. Tannins are ripe and fruit based too, infusing a nice cherry pip character to the medium-bodied flow of the wine. Drink now or hold for the medium term. - David Bicknell, 1 August 2019.

Winery Tasting Notes

“Varietally expressive with ample plum and blackberry fruits, there is a warm earth and spicy savouriness that immediately appeals with a backbone of fine, sinewy tannins to see an extended cellaring potential out to 2030 plus.” - Alister Purbrick ~ Fourth Generation CEO and Winemaker.

Winery Profile

Established in 1860 Tahbilk is one of Australia's most beautiful & historic wineries. Located in the Nagambie Lakes region of central Victoria (120kms north of Melbourne), one of the nation's premium viticultural areas, the property comprises some 1,214 hectares of rich river flats with a frontage of 11 kms to the Goulburn River and 8 kms of permanent backwaters & creeks.

The vineyard comprises 200 hectares of vines including the French Rhone Valley whites of Marsanne, Viognier & Roussanne; the Rhone reds - Shiraz, Grenache & Mourvedre; along with traditional varieties such as Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Chardonnay, Riesling, Semillon, Sauvignon Blanc & Verdelho.

Vineyard plantings extend back to Tahbilk's founding with original pre-phylloxera Shiraz vines still surviving from 1860 - an eponymous wine produced from them since 1979.

Tahbilk is further blessed with an abundance of further "old vine" plantings including Shiraz from 1933 (the prime source for Tahbilk's 'Eric Stevens Purbrick' Shiraz releases), Cabernet Sauvignon back to 1949 and Marsanne from 1927 (a "sister" white release to the 1860 Vines Shiraz produced from them).

Harvest commences in early March and continues for five to six weeks with approximately 1,600 tonnes (red & white) grapes processed.Total production is over 100,000 cases with just over 20% being exported to the key markets of U.S.A., United Kingdom, Canada, New Zealand, Switzerland and the Scandinavian countries.
