Soy isoflavones are part of many traditional diets, especially in Japan, where they are consumed on a daily basis. Research shows women benefit from a healthy intake of these phyto-oestrogens. 

Phyto-oestrogens are special compounds found in some herbs and foods we eat. The word, phyto-oestrogen, comes from “phyto,” meaning plant, and “oestrogen” and they have the ability to influence oestrogenic activity in the body. It is important to know that, although phyto-oestrogens may have some similar actions to oestrogens, they are not the true oestrogen substances produced in the body. Phyto-oestrogens bind to oestrogen receptors in the body and produce either pro-oestrogenic effects, or anti-oestrogenic effects on the target tissues. The effects on the tissues depend, in part, on the body’s own levels of oestrogen and the levels in the receptor sites.
