Watkins is a cellar door, winery and vineyards producing "Modern Australian" wines from the Adelaide Hills and Langhorne Creek. The winery has a focus on quality, producing a considered portfolio of masterful wines to be bottled. The cellar door prides itself on the sense of community, a gathering place of enthusiasts and friends. The vineyards emphasize sustainability, using native flora and fauna and organic practices to engineer minimal impact farming.
The Watkins brand launched in October 2020, building on over 20 years of wine industry history. The Watkins family journey began in viticulture in the 1990s, eventually operating vineyards in the Adelaide Hills, Langhorne Creek, Currency Creek and McLaren Vale. In the 2000s the next generation of Watkins entered the wine industry in various roles, with inevitable returns to the family business in the 2010s. In 2020, Sam (now an award winning winemaker), Josephine and Ben launched the cellar door and bottled brand, to show the world the winemaking craft that we have honed through hard work.
The brand prides itself on the quality of the wines, winning awards and critical acclaim from the first vintage with the 2020 Langhorne Creek Trophy for Best White, Rose or Sparkling for the inaugural release of the Watkins Classic Rose.
The Watkins family operates from its Chandlers Hill winery, which is the largest winery in the Adelaide Hills wine region
Winemaker Bio
Sam Watkins is a winemaker with 15 years’ experience in 6 regions (Napa Valley USA, Porto Portugal, Orange NSW, and Coonawarra, Barossa, McLaren Vale and Adelaide Hills, SA) across both hemispheres.
Sam regularly features as a judge in national wine shows and industry publications and is Chair of the Langhorne Creek Winemaking Committee. His winemaking focuses on unlocking the optimal expression of variety from the cooler climate premium fruit produced on the Watkins vineyards in Langhorne Creek and Adelaide Hills.
The inaugural release of the Watkins Cellar Reserve range is a classic 2014 McLaren Vale Shiraz. The extended maturation in the winery and the supporting oak result in this bottle presenting perfectly to drink now or within three years.
The wine has aged to a deep garnet colour in the glass, and is showing rich, ripe plums and figs overlayed with some spices like cloves and anise and drawn out with dark chocolate & coffee.
The first-class generous McLaren Vale shiraz fruit profile is on show, with a lovely mid palate balanced out with a clean acid line. The maturation time has seen the strong tannins rounded off to a plush and supple mouthfeel on the finish.
