Vineyards

Wirra Wirra sources fruit from a combination of owned vineyards and premium McLaren Vale growers. The blend of individual vineyard and sub-regional characteristics is the key to the resulting style. From a combination of old vine McLaren Vale sites - typically low in vigour, producing modest yields of intense fruit, soils range from deep sands over ironstone and loamy sand over sandstone clay.

Oak Maturation

Vineyard batches were matured separately, each in their own individual selection of French oak barriques and puncheons. The final blend comprised approximately one-third new oak, the balance coming from largely two and three-year-old barriques and puncheons.

Vinification

Parcels from each vineyard were picked in small batches and fermented separately in twoton open fermentersto maintain their distinct vineyard character. In some, a small amount of whole bunches was included. Each batch were tasted daily to determine the level of hand plunging and maceration required during fermentation. At the desired level of tannin and fruit extraction, each ferment was basket pressed with winemakers making the press cut at the first sign of tannin hardness. Pressed batches were transferred to a tailored selection of French oak barriques and puncheons in which they completed malolactic fermentation. Following MLF and several times thereafter, individual wines were racked and returned. At the end of this program, select barrels from the most outstanding vineyard parcels were blended and filtered with a single pass before going to bottle.

Winery Tasting Notes

Inky purple with vibrant hue. Dark plum, mocha and nutmeg are layered with subtle hints of charcuterie, adding savoury complexity to the nose. Plush mulberry compote, sweet baking spices and dark chocolate unfold in luxurious layers, with fleshy fruits and spice seamlessly integrated for a harmonious expression.

Winery Profile

Wirra Wirra is situated 37 km south of Adelaide in South Australia's famous McLaren Vale wine region. It is an historic site, which was originally built in 1894 and which by 1903 was producing a substantial quantity of wine that was primarily exported to the rest of the British Empire.

Wirra Wirra is an aboriginal name meaning "amongst the gumtrees". It was established by Robert Strangways Wigley, a former state cricketer and well known eccentric. Following his death in 1924 the vineyards were sold by his family and the cellars fell into disuse. It remained that way until 1969 when the site was bought from Vern Sparrow, son of Wigley's foreman Jack Sparrow, by cousins Greg and Roger Trott.

Assisted by Roger and armed with a few old photos and sketches, Greg re-built the derelict Wirra Wirra winery from two remaining walls and some slate fermenting tanks, transforming it into the handsome winery it is today. Trott did this all in his own inimitable style - always passionate, always iconoclastic, always fun and always unique. Trott lived by a simple philosophy; "Never give misery an even break, nor bad wine a second sip. You must be serious about quality, dedicated to your task in life, especially winemaking, but this should all be fun."

After a long illness, Trott passed away in 2005, but his spirit and sense of purpose is alive and well at Wirra Wirra. The winery has built a reputation for its classic McLaren Vale reds and elegant Adelaide Hills whites and has been described by James Halliday as “the best small to medium producer in McLaren vale and up there among the nation’s finest.”

Visitors to the historic ironstone cellars at Wirra Wirra will get a touch of Greg Trott's philosophy which is built around the celebration of life: great food, stimulating conversation, marvellous music, and of course a fine bottle of wine. From the massive post and rail fence, known as “Woodhenge” to the giant Angelus bell that sits atop the winery, Wirra Wirra has discoveries that have helped make it a must-visit destination in the McLaren Vale wine region.
