This is a thrilling wine

97 Points

For long an Australian icon, this has really lightened up its act. For the better. The sort of exotic perfume-lifted lilac floral-seldom seen across shiraz from such a warm zone. Pulpy and juicy in the mouth, rather than over-extracted and desiccated. A beautiful sash of oak, directing a cavalcade of clove, five spice and ample blue to dark fruit references along a skein of peppery acidity. Riveting complexity and the feeling of something far lighter than the ABV suggests. This is a thrilling wine. There are no two ways about it.

A polished shiraz

96 Points

A polished shiraz that draws you very deep on the palate, with blackberry, tar, dark-chocolate and walnut character. It’s full and very tight, with tension and focus. Thick, silky texture. Unique wine that’s aged for 23 months in winery-produced 100-liter French and American-oak octaves. Drink or hold.

Winery Tasting Notes

The 2017 The Octavius is deep red in colour with purple hues. Alluring aromas of spicy perfume, fresh lifted red cherry florals, blueberries, blackberries and dark plums entwined in cocoa powder and savoury notes. A deliciously complex palate with textural concentration and a rich core of currants, blue and black fruits wrapped in long, seamless, elegantly refined tannins.

Winery Profile

Red 5 Star Winery -James Halliday, Australian Wine Companion Edition 2011

Family-owned and run by Robert Hill Smith, Yalumba has long had a commitment to quality and has shown great vision in its selection of vineyard sites, new varieties and brands. It has always been a serious player at the top end of full-bodied (and full-blooded) Australian reds, and was the pioneer in the use of screwcaps. While its estate vineyards are largely planted to mainstream varieties, it has taken marketing ownership of viognier. However, these days its own brands revolve around the Y Series and a number of stand-alone brands across the length and breadth of SA. Yalumba has been very successful in building its export base. Exports to all major markets.

It’s a beauty

A pinnacle wine from Yalumba, crafted expertly by head red winemaker Kevin Glastonbury in an evolving style that has eased the wine in the past few years from a muscly character to a more elegant approach for old-vine Barossa Shiraz. Its average vine age is 80 years, the oldest plantings dating back to 1854. The name derives from Yalumba’s own cooperage-made barrels, where the wine has matured for close to two years, including a proportion in seasoned American oak octaves (100 litres). They play a part in the final expression of this grand wine, a 67:33 percentage mix of Barossa Valley and Eden Valley fruit to give it a resonance and complete regional provenance. The complex dark-berried nature of the palate, its peppery spice with floral top notes, and evenness of structure are what really impress. It’s a beauty, with all the expected power of the style, encouragingly satisfying drinkable now, and certainly for many more years. (Its luxury sibling, The Caley Cabernet Shiraz 2018, will be available in June.).
