Wine Summary Image

GraysOnline hand selected 6 Great Australian Grenache/Grenache Blends from McLaren Vale and Barossa, two premium Australian Wine Region.

Otherwise known as garnacha, garnatxa, grenache noir and alicante, grenache is a grape varietal that goes by many names and is well-loved by many palates. Renowned for its easy drinking nature (thanks to its balanced body, soft tannins and juicy fruits), grenache is a formidable blend partner (hello shiraz, hello mourvedre) and a stellar single varietal wine.

The wines are all rated 92 points and over in James Halliday's Australian Wine Companion.

This premium case of six Grenache/Blends includes:

Expert Reviews

94 Points - Twelftree Copperview Onkaparinga Gorge 2012 Slightly more purple in a hue of good depth; not quite as bright as Moritz; an altogether more powerful wine, rich and full, red and black fruits; some warmth on the finish, partially balanced by earthy tannins.

93 Points - Willuga 100 Grenache 2015 There is great effort at this estate-palpably evident across the range as taut, chalky tannins and an edge of briar-to rein in the excessive exuberance and alcoholic tendencies of certain varieties when left to hang too late, or when managed poorly, in the vineyard. This grenache is a fine achievement at the price, boasting the varietal genetics of kirsch and tangy red fruits, all slung with alacrity across a beam of crunchy, pumice-tuned tannins and assuaging pomegranate acidity. A bit thin and green, perhaps. A gentle rasp... and snap, crackle, pop!

95 Points - Yangarra GSM 2015 One of the noticeable traits about Yangarra's wines, GSM in particular, there's nothing harsh or worked, there's a purity of fruit that comes through, the balance of tannins to acidity, and this not shy with the latter. The right amount of spice and flavour and most importantly, crafting a really, delicious drink.

94 Points - Hentley Farm The Rogue Barossa Field Blend 2016 46% grenache, 13% malbec, 9% each of mataro and shiraz, 7% tempranillo, 3% nero d'Avola and 2% zinfandel. Not a field blend (ie from a single vineyard), but that's irrelevant, the wine unified by 9 months maturation in used oak. It has a really attractive juicy freshness to both the bouquet and palate, and is intended for early consumption, and endless discussion by loyal followers of Hentley Farm.

92 Points - Robert Oatley Signature GSM 2015 Awash with dense sweet spicy fruit, some raspberry confection, musk and eucalypt mingling with cedary oak and warm earth notes. Fuller bodied, concentrated with slightly raspy tannins.

  • 94 Points - Head Old Vine Grenache 2013 From vines planted in '42, matured in a 20yo 2500l foudre with 10% whole bunches, 90% destemmed, plunged daily for 2 weeks. The Head magic gives the wine intensity and texture, not blowsy confection; its raspberry and red berry fruit has a translucent web of superfine tannins.

Winery Tasting Notes

Twelftree Copperview Onkararinga Gorge Grenache 2012Smokey cherry and boysenberry scents are lifted by a spicy nuance and a hint of fresh violet. Powerful, rich and full, birght plum and boysenberry flavours with meaty overtones. Some warmth on the finish shows intensity and length balanced by earthy tannins.

Willunga 100 GrenacheBright lifted and intense floral aromatics in a deliberate red fruit spectrum show a typical style of straight McLaren Vale Grenache. A great texture and richness from the lees aging and oak maturation to harness the fine sandy tannins.

Yangarra GSM A bright and fragrant aroma, with spicy red and blue fruits. The blending of these three varieties is an equal mix of sharp precision as much as sensuality. Its fruit is bright, shiny and fresh, showing that silky sheen of the Grenache, yet below are more brooding layers which will unfold over the next decade. Without upsetting this harmonious balance, the Shiraz and Mourvedre will gradually emerge.

Hentley Farm The Rogue Barossa Field Blend Grenache driven aromatics of strawberry, raspberry and Turkish delight with underlying herbaceous elements of lavender and pot puree. A light textural palate with red fruits of stewed rhubarb and raspberry combined with notes of spicy quince and boot leather.

Robert Oatley Signature GSMA blend of 48% Grenache, 47% Shiraz and 5% Mourvedre (Mataro) from southern McLaren Vale, where the hills run down to the ocean. Fermented on skins in a combination of open and closed fermenters and matured in French oak for 6 months. Enjoy now to 2022.

Head Old Vine Grenache Deep crimson red with brilliant clarity, poise, almost shimmering in the glass. Aromas of fresh red cherries and fruit spice, aniseed, cured meat and forest floor. Barely medium bodied in extract with sweet, textural red fruit flavours and lingering, sweet mouthwatering tannins. Great persistence and length of flavour here.
