Wine Summary Image

This Reserve Chardonnay represents a blend of highly distinctive and mature vineyard sites located on the southern edge of the Mornington Peninsula. The fruit for this wine is sourced from mature vineyards aged over twenty years. The wine is 100% barrel fermented in French oak barriques, of which 30% are new. The wine is lees-stirred monthly during its eleven months in barrel. This wine has lovely fruit, is complex and elegant, with a fine tannin structure.

A blend of vineyards all planted in the mid-'80s or earlier; whole bunch-pressed, fermented in barrel and puncheon (20-25% new), blended after 9 months, followed by a further 5 months in barrel as a blend; 60% mlf. The most complex of the Stonier '12 Chardonnays in both texture and fruit-weight and ripeness; here melon and fig join the flavours of the other wines, and the creamy cashew notes are more obvious. Colour

Straw yellow with green tinges.

Aroma

Lifted citrus fruit and lemon rind with some sweet floral notes. As a young wine there is also a hint of toasty vanilla nutmeg and cinnamon derived from the French oak.

Palate

The extraordinary suitability of Chardonnay to the Mornington Peninsula has certainly shone in such as a difficult vintage. There is a lovely fresh lift to the palate, surrounded by delicate, but intense citrus fruits such as lemon and grapefruit. As always from these two vineyards, there is some lovely mineral- like acid piercing the length of the palate.

Stonier are pioneers of the Mornington Peninsula where they first planted Chardonnay in 1978 and Pinot Noir in 1982. Stonier achieve wines of the highest quality through continual improvements in viticulture and attention to detail in the winery. In each of the Stonier wines, Mike Symons looks for that extra degree of varietal definition and site expression. His aim is to continue to develop wines with a regional style, refined structure and seamless complexity.
