The Vintage

A short winter and warm dry spring got the growing season off to an early start with mild days. A well timed rain in mid-January brought relief to dry vineyards and rainwater tanks alike after many months of no rain. The early start and ideal ripening conditions after the rain brought on vintage at a frantic pace, with all the 2015 wines showing abundant aromas and flavours.

Barossa Valley Shiraz yields were slightly below average, and all the wines showed good concentration, superb colour and richness.

The Vineyard

The Fromm Family Vineyard – located at 200m elevation in the south eastern pocket near Lyndoch Township in the Barossa Valley. The vineyard site gently slopes on red brown loam soils.

The Vinification

The St Hallett winemaking philosophy is relatively simple - minimum intervention and maximum attention.

All Shiraz vineyards are crushed and fermented separately. The Fromm vineyard parcel destined for this wine was fermented for 8 days at 22 to 24 degrees. Post fermentation the wine was matured in seasoned American and French Oak for 12 months before being blended and bottled.

The Inspiration

The history of grape growing in Barossa dates back to the 1840’s. Since this time the local community has existed for wine. With each vintage that passes and with every generation that succeeds their forbearers, a more intimate relationship with the land evolves. is evolution helps to unearth plots of sacred ground that hold something special.

Such is the case with the Fromm vineyard. Fourth generation Barossa grower, Ryan Fromm, lovingly tends this special plot near the township of Williamstown in the southern part of the Barossa Valley. In successive tastings over many vintages, this block has earned the acknowledgement of ‘Sacred Ground’ for its richness, depth and complexity.

Winery Profile

In the heart of the Barossa Valley, Australia’s best known wine region, lies St Hallett, one of the country’s premier wine producers. Established by the Lindner Family in 1944, for many years St Hallett’s winemaking focus was, like many local wineries, on producing fortified wines. However during the seventies and eighties St Hallett turned to explore the true potential of the Barossa through premium table wines. This has resulted in St Hallett’s elevation as one of Australia’s best producers.

St Hallett is renowned for crafting full-flavored, textured wines entirely from Barossa Valley fruit and is credited with producing benchmark wines of the region such as the iconic St Hallett Old Block Shiraz, made from vines aged up to 100 years old.
