A ray of morning sunshine in the glass. A delicate little number here showcasing the beauty of Viognier. Fresh apricots are rolled into a neat parcel with ginger nut biscuit crumbs. White fleshed stonefruit adds detail with slivers of almonds and a faint drop of lemon juice. Those fine spices are drawn out and run long on a moreish and stylish finish. This is a great drink. Pass the pork.

When stranded, with few options at hand, this is always a reliable go-to. Mid-weighted, textural, exuberantly aromatic, mid-weighted and immensely satisfying. Apricot pith, ginger chutney, rooibos and white peach. The phenolic rails, slippery and pliant, just enough to direct the effusive fruit. Very good viognier for the price. Drink now.

Family-owned and run by Robert Hill Smith, Yalumba has long had a commitment to quality and has shown great vision in its selection of vineyard sites, new varieties and brands. It has always been a serious player at the top end of full-bodied (and full-blooded) Australian reds, and was the pioneer in the use of screwcaps. While its estate vineyards are largely planted to mainstream varieties, it has taken marketing ownership of viognier. However, these days its own brands revolve around the Y Series and a number of stand-alone brands across the length and breadth of SA. Yalumba has been very successful in building its export base. Exports to all major markets.
